TRAVELOG GUIDE

Travel map statistics: countries, population, area and GDP

Travelog turns your selected destinations into map statistics. Country totals and continent progress describe your map; population, area and GDP shares describe the selected countries, rather than the people or land you personally encountered.

What country statistics are available?

The country statistics section shows your destination count, continent count, map coverage and population total. It also compares the combined population, area and GDP of selected destinations with the world total.

How are world shares calculated?

For each metric, the site sums the available values for selected destinations and divides by the corresponding World Bank world total. Population and GDP use 2024 observations; area uses 2023. A missing observation is not treated as zero or replaced with an estimate.

These are country-level comparisons. For example, selecting a large country includes its full recorded area; it does not mean you have explored every part of it.

What do the Top 10 lists show?

Switch between population, area, GDP, GDP per capita and population density. Lists rank destinations with available observations for each metric and highlight the ones you have selected. They are not a ranking of travelers or travel quality.

Sources: population, area, GDP, GDP per capita and population density.

Cities, landmarks and published user charts

The city section shows progress across GaWC groups. The landmark section shows progress across the Travelog landmark collection and continents. Your selections in these maps are independent of your country selections.

The published statistics library is a separate collection of Travelog user visit graphics, transcribed into tables. Read its source and methodology notes before comparing those percentages.
