Landmarks 9

Must-see · 9

  1. 1

    Terracotta Army

The buried army of thousands of life-size clay soldiers guarding China's first emperor is Xi'an's unmissable sight and one of the world's great archaeological discoveries. Go early in the morning to beat the tour groups, and book tickets online in advance since daily numbers are capped.

  2. 2

    Xi'an City Wall

The most complete ancient city wall in China forms a 14 km loop you can walk or cycle on top of, with great views over the old town. Rent a bike near the South Gate in late afternoon and stay for sunset; the wall is lit at night.

  3. 3

    Big Wild Goose Pagoda

This Tang-dynasty Buddhist pagoda, built to house scriptures brought from India, anchors a lively square with a musical fountain show in the evening. Climb to the upper tiers for city views, and dress modestly if you enter the temple grounds.

  4. 4

    Muslim Quarter

A maze of lanes packed with street food, where the Hui Muslim community has traded for centuries. Come hungry in the evening for roujiamo and lamb skewers, and wander the side alleys away from the main tourist strip.

  5. 5

    Shaanxi History Museum

One of China's best museums, with treasures from the Tang dynasty and earlier that give context to everything else you see in Xi'an. Entry is free but limited, so reserve a timed ticket online days ahead; it is closed on Mondays.

  6. 6

    Bell Tower of Xi'an

The wooden tower at the exact center of the old city is a landmark you will pass constantly, and its upper gallery has fine views down the four main streets. Visit after dark when it is illuminated, and combine it with the Drum Tower opposite.

  7. 7

    Great Mosque of Xi'an

A working mosque hidden behind a wall in the Muslim Quarter, blending Islamic function with Chinese courtyard architecture. It is an active place of worship, so dress respectfully and avoid prayer times; the entrance is off Huajue Lane.

  8. 8

    Huaqing Palace

A hot-spring palace at the foot of Mount Li, famous for the Tang-dynasty love story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei. It pairs naturally with the Terracotta Army on a day trip east of the city; go in the morning to avoid crowds.

  9. 9

    Daming Palace ruins

The vast site of the Tang dynasty's main imperial palace, now a landscaped park with excavated foundations and a good museum. It is spread out and sunny, so bring water and shade; it is a quiet contrast to the busy city center.
