    Swap in instead

    • Swap a museum morning for Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, half a day with the U4.
    • Take a day trip to the Wachau valley or Baden by train; check times on the day.
    • Add a Danube evening: swim or walk at the Alte Donau, or cycle the Donauinsel.

    Getting around

    • U-Bahn, trams, and buses run on one ticket; buy a 24/48/72-hour pass or single fares around €2.60.
    • Validate tickets before riding; inspectors fine on the spot.
    • Taxis are metered; Uber and Bolt both work in Vienna.
    • Driving is slow and parking is scarce; skip the rental car in town.
    • The centre is flat and walkable; bikes and e-scooters are easy to rent.
    • No ferries; the Danube is crossed by bridges and the U-Bahn.

    Where to stay

    • Innere Stadt · ≈ EUR 150–400 a night
Walk to St. Stephen's, the Hofburg and the Ringstrasse. Quietest at night; book early.
    • Leopoldstadt · ≈ EUR 90–220 a night
Across the Danube canal, near the Prater and the Augarten. Good U-Bahn links, better value.
    • Mariahilf · ≈ EUR 100–240 a night
Between the MuseumsQuartier and the Naschmarkt. Lively streets, easy walk to the centre.
    • Neubau · ≈ EUR 85–200 a night
Independent shops, bars and cafés. Young feel, 10–15 minutes on the U-Bahn to the centre.

    Food & drink

    • Try a Wiener Schnitzel (veal or pork) with potato salad, and Tafelspitz (boiled beef) in a traditional Beisl.
    • Coffee houses are a ritual: order a Melange, sit long, and read the papers. Cake like Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel is normal mid-afternoon.
    • Naschmarkt on Saturday morning: stalls, spices and cheap snacks. Many stands close on Sunday.
    • Street food: a Käsekrainer sausage from a Würstelstand, around €5–7.
    • Book dinner ahead for popular places; many kitchens close around 22:00. Tipping is rounding up plus a little, said aloud.

    Tips

    1. Coffeehouse culture is sacred — order a Melange, take your time, and don't expect the waiter to rush you
    2. Buy a multi-day transit pass, but remember to validate it before your first ride
    3. Tap water is exceptionally clean and comes directly from springs in the Alps
    4. Almost all retail stores, including grocery shops, are strictly closed on Sundays
    5. Stand on the right, walk on the left on all subway escalators
