Landmarks 10

Must-see · 5

  1. 1

    Medina of Tunis

The UNESCO-listed old town is the heart of the city, a dense maze of souks, mosques and historic houses that rewards wandering. Go in the morning when the markets are lively but less crowded, and dress modestly for mosque visits. It sits right by the central station, so you can walk in from Bab El Bhar.

  2. 2

    Sidi Bou Said

The blue-and-white clifftop village is Tunis's most photographed spot, with sea views and charming lanes. Visit on a weekday morning to avoid crowds, and take the TGM light rail from the city center. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled slopes.

  3. 3

    Bardo National Museum

Home to one of the world's finest collections of Roman mosaics, this is a must for anyone interested in Tunisia's layered history. Allow at least two hours and check opening days before you go, as hours can vary. It is a short taxi or metro ride from the center.

  4. 4

    Archaeological Site of Carthage

The sprawling ruins of ancient Carthage, including baths and villas, are a highlight for history lovers. The site is spread out, so plan to take a taxi between the main areas. Bring water and sun protection, as shade is limited.

  5. 5

    Zitouna Mosque

The city's principal mosque sits at the center of the Medina and anchors its spiritual life. Non-Muslims may not enter the prayer hall, but the courtyard and surroundings are worth seeing. Visit outside prayer times and dress conservatively.

    Swap in instead

    • Add a half-day at Carthage and the Bardo Museum; both need more time than most day plans allow.
    • Take the TGM to Sidi Bou Saïd for a slow afternoon of cafés and views over the bay.
    • With a spare day, head to Dougga or Kairouan by organised tour; check departure times the day before.

    Getting around

    • Light metro: five Transtu lines, 0.500-0.650 DT per ride; hubs at Place de la République and Place de Barcelone.
    • TGM suburban train from Tunis Marine to La Goulette, Carthage, Sidi Bou Saïd and La Marsa, about 0.800 DT each way.
    • RFR suburban rail lines A, D and E serve outer suburbs; roughly 1 DT, line D reaches the Bardo Museum.
    • Buses are cheap, from about 0.320 DT; airport bus 104 to Tunis Marine costs 1 DT.
    • Taxis are plentiful and metered; insist on the meter, avoid hotel queues, and use the inDrive app (Bolt no longer works).
    • Driving is for confident drivers only; traffic is heavy and night driving is riskier.

    Where to stay

    • Medina · ≈ TND 120–400 a night
Sleep inside the old city walls: souks, mosques and cafés on your doorstep. Quiet at night, but lanes are confusing after dark.
    • Ville Nouvelle · ≈ TND 150–450 a night
Central and easy: the TGM train, metro hubs and the main avenue. Best base for first-timers without a car.
    • La Marsa · ≈ TND 180–500 a night
Seaside suburb with cafés and a beach; TGM train to the centre in about 30 minutes.
    • Sidi Bou Saïd · ≈ TND 250–700 a night
Blue-and-white village on the cliff. Romantic and pricey; good for one or two nights, not for every day.

    Food & drink

    • Try Tunisian staples: couscous on Friday, brik (fried pastry with egg), lablabi soup and harissa with everything.
    • In the medina, look for small family restaurants near the souks; a full lunch often costs 10–25 TND.
    • Seafood is best near La Goulette and La Marsa; grilled fish is sold by weight, so ask the price first.
    • Street snacks: fricassé sandwiches, makroudh pastries and mint tea in a café. Cheap and filling.
    • Alcohol is limited outside hotels and a few licensed restaurants. Don't count on wine with dinner everywhere.

    Tips

    1. Take the TGM train to the picturesque blue-and-white clifftop village of Sidi Bou Said
    2. The Bardo National Museum houses one of the world's most incredible collections of Roman mosaics
    3. Haggle respectfully when shopping in the winding alleys of the Medina
    4. French and Arabic are the primary languages, though English is growing among the youth
    5. Be mindful of your belongings in crowded souks and on the light rail
