Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Skanderbeg Square

Tirana's vast central plaza is the heart of the city and the natural starting point for any visit, ringed by the mosque, clock tower and national museum. Come early morning or after sunset when the lights come on and the square is at its most atmospheric; it is free and open at all hours.

  2. 2

    Enver Hoxha Pyramid

This striking concrete pyramid, built as a monument to the communist dictator, is Tirana's most talked-about piece of brutalist heritage and a favorite spot for photos and views. It sits a short walk from Skanderbeg Square; go in the late afternoon for softer light and fewer people.

  3. 3

    Bunk'Art 1 Museum

A sprawling Cold War bunker turned museum that gives a gripping look at Albania's communist past through its tunnels and rooms. It is a few kilometers from the center, so take a taxi or local bus; allow at least an hour and check opening hours before you go.

  4. 4

    National Historical Museum

The country's main museum covers Albanian history from antiquity through the communist era, with the famous mosaic on its facade. It faces Skanderbeg Square, making it easy to combine with the square and mosque; a couple of hours is enough for the highlights.

  5. 5

    Ethem Bey Mosque

A graceful 18th-century mosque right on Skanderbeg Square, known for its painted interior and peaceful courtyard. It is an active place of worship, so dress modestly and avoid visiting during prayer times; entry is free.

  6. 6

    Tirana Clock Tower

The slender Ottoman-era clock tower next to the mosque is one of the city's best-loved symbols and offers a quick climb for a view over the square. It is steps from Skanderbeg Square; go on a clear day and watch your footing on the narrow stairs.

  7. 7

    Blloku district

Once the sealed-off neighborhood for communist elites, Blloku is now Tirana's liveliest area for cafes, bars and evening strolls. It is a short walk south of the center; come in the evening when the streets fill up.

  8. 8

    Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral

A modern Orthodox cathedral with a distinctive domed and arched design, worth a look for its frescoed interior. It is near the center and free to enter; dress respectfully and keep quiet during services.

    • Komuna e Parisit · ≈ ALL 4,500–10,000 a night
Local, cheaper and near the big park and cable car; use buses or taxis to the centre.

    Food & drink

    • Start the day with byrek (flaky pastry with cheese or spinach) and a strong coffee, roughly 100–200 lek.
    • Try tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt) and fërgesë (peppers, tomato and cheese) at a traditional restaurant.
    • Blloku has the densest cluster of cafés and restaurants; walk a block off the main street for better prices.
    • Cheap eats: grilled meat, suflaqe (wraps) and bakery snacks for about 300–600 lek a meal.
