Landmarks 5

Must-see · 5

  1. 1

    Jinci Temple

Taiyuan's most celebrated ancient site, a sprawling temple complex with Song-dynasty halls, old cypresses and spring-fed ponds that draws visitors from across Shanxi. Go early in the morning to avoid tour groups, and allow at least two hours to walk the grounds. It sits southwest of the city centre; a taxi or local bus is the easiest way out.

  2. 2

    Twin Pagoda Temple

The pair of brick pagodas is Taiyuan's best-known skyline landmark and a pleasant place to climb for views over the city. The site is compact, so pair it with a walk in the surrounding park. Visit in late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.

  3. 3

    Shanxi Museum

One of China's strongest provincial museums, with superb bronzes, Buddhist sculpture and artefacts explaining Shanxi's long history. It is free with advance reservation, so book online before you go. Closed on Mondays; allow half a day.

  4. 4

    Taiyuan Ancient City Wall

A rebuilt stretch of the old city fortifications that gives a sense of Taiyuan's historic core and is good for an evening stroll. Come near sunset when the lights come on. It is central and easy to reach on foot or by taxi.

  5. 5

    Yongzuo Temple

A quieter Buddhist temple known for its distinctive architecture and brick pagoda, worth an hour if you have time beyond the headline sights. It is less crowded than the Twin Pagoda Temple. Check opening hours before setting out.
