This gold-domed cathedral is Sofia's most recognizable symbol and a masterpiece of Balkan Orthodox architecture. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and see the interior frescoes in quiet light; entry to the crypt museum is separate and modestly priced.

  2. 2

    Boyana Church

A UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its 13th-century frescoes, considered precursors of the Renaissance. Visits are limited to 10 minutes inside to protect the art, so book a timed slot in advance and take bus 64 from the city center.

  3. 3

    Church of St George (Rotunda)

A 4th-century Roman rotunda church tucked in a courtyard behind the Sheraton, with layers of medieval frescoes. It's free to enter and open daily; dress respectfully and avoid services.

  4. 4

    • Tipping is modest, around 10%. Check the bill; some places add a service charge.

    Tips

    1. The Cyrillic alphabet is used exclusively; learning a few letters will help with reading street signs
    2. Visit the stunning Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world
    3. You can literally step over ancient Roman ruins (Serdica) while walking through the Serdika metro station
    4. Vitosha Mountain is accessible via public transit and offers great hiking in summer and skiing in winter
    5. Nodding your head means 'no' and shaking it means 'yes' in traditional Bulgarian culture, which can be very confusing
