Landmarks 3

Must-see · 3

  1. 1

    Shenyang Imperial Palace

The only other imperial palace complex in China besides Beijing's Forbidden City, built by the early Qing rulers and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is smaller and far less crowded, so you can see the distinctive Manchu architecture up close. Go early on a weekday; tickets are sold at the gate and a passport is needed for foreigners.

  2. 2

    9.18 Historical Museum

A powerful, sobering museum marking the 1931 Mukden Incident that began Japan's occupation of northeast China. The exhibits are extensive and mostly in Chinese, but the scale and artifacts speak for themselves. It is free with ID, closed Mondays, and best reached by metro plus a short walk.

  3. 3

    Shenyang Steam Locomotive Museum

A specialist museum with a large collection of preserved steam locomotives, from huge freight engines to rare prototypes. It is a must for rail fans and an unusual stop for anyone curious about industrial history. Check opening days before you go, as hours can be limited, and allow an hour or two.

    • Add a half-day for the 918 History Museum; it is large and sobering, so allow time.
    • Swap one city day for the Dongling tomb park if you have already seen Beiling.
    • In summer, take a slower afternoon in a park or teahouse instead of another museum.

Newer, quieter district with parks and the provincial museum area; needs transport to the old sights.

    Food & drink

    • Try Northeast classics: dumplings (饺子), guobaorou (sweet-and-sour pork) and stewed chicken with mushrooms.
    • Shenyang barbecue is a local ritual: grill at the table, order lamb skewers and cold beer.
    • Old streets near the Imperial Palace have snack stalls; prices are low, so pay in cash or by QR code.
    • Korean food is common and good here, thanks to the nearby border region; look for cold noodles and grilled meat.
    • Winter is hotpot season. Book popular places on weekends; expect queues after 6pm.

    Tips

    1. Visit the Shenyang Imperial Palace, the only existing royal palace in China outside of Beijing
    2. Bundle up heavily if visiting in winter; temperatures frequently drop well below freezing
    3. Try the hearty local Dongbei (Northeastern) cuisine, famous for dumplings and stews
    4. WeChat Pay and Alipay are mandatory for almost all payments
    5. The city has a massive Korean community, offering excellent authentic Korean BBQ
