Landmarks 17

Must-see · 7

  1. 1

    Seville Cathedral

One of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world, it holds the tomb of Christopher Columbus and a richly decorated interior. Its scale alone makes it a must-see for first-time visitors. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heaviest crowds, and buy tickets online in advance.

  2. 2

    Alcázar of Seville

A working royal palace with Mudéjar palace halls, tiled courtyards and formal gardens that rank among Spain's finest. It is one of the most atmospheric places in the city. Book a timed entry ticket ahead, as queues can build up, and dress for walking outdoors.

  3. 3

    Giralda

The bell tower of the cathedral, originally built as a minaret, and the city's most recognisable landmark. Climbing it rewards you with wide views over the rooftops. Visit with the cathedral ticket, and wear comfortable shoes since the ascent is by ramp.

  4. 4

    Plaza de España, Seville

A grand half-circle of brick and tile built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, with canal-side bridges and painted alcoves for each province. It is especially photogenic in the golden hour. Reach it by walking through Parque de María Luisa, which is a short stroll away.

  5. 5

    Barrio de Santa Cruz

The old Jewish quarter, a maze of narrow lanes, orange-tree squares and whitewashed houses. It is the best area to wander and eat tapas. Visit in the cooler morning or evening, as the lanes get crowded at midday.

  6. 6

    Casa de Pilatos

A 16th-century palace blending Mudéjar and Renaissance styles, with azulejo-tiled patios and a lovely garden. It is a quieter alternative to the Alcázar. The ground floor entry ticket is inexpensive and can be bought online.

  7. 7

    Torre del Oro

A 13th-century riverside watchtower on the Guadalquivir, once used to guard the port and chain across the river. It is a short walk from the Triana Bridge and makes a good stop on a riverside walk. Go in the late afternoon for pleasant light on the water.

    Food & drink

    • Eat tapas in small bars: order a few plates to share, such as jamón, croquetas and pimientos de padrón.
    • Try the bars in Triana along Calle Betis and across the river for lively, local-style evenings.
    • Eat late: many locals dine after 21:00, so kitchens may be quieter before then.
    • Pick a sit-down café or bar for breakfast with toast and coffee, usually cheaper than a full meal (check prices on the day).
    • Ask for the menu del día at lunch for a set meal at a good price (check on the day).
