  • MetroTwo lines, RD$20 per ride with a smartcard (RD$60 card plus RD$20 minimum). Useful for some cross-city trips.
  • BusCheap but confusing; fares around RD$20–40. Fine if you have time and local help.

  1. 1

    Ciudad Colonial

The walled old town is the heart of the first European city in the Americas, packed with colonial streets, plazas and churches. Wander it on foot early in the morning before the heat and crowds build, and wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones.

  2. 2

    Alcazar de Colon

This palace built for Diego Columbus is the city's most striking colonial residence and a must for understanding its Spanish heritage. Check opening hours before you go, as they can vary, and go early to avoid tour groups.

  3. 3

    Ozama Fortress

The oldest military fortress in the Americas guards the river mouth and offers some of the best views over the old town. Bring water and sun protection, as the grounds are largely open to the sun.

  4. 4

    Catedral Primada de América

The first cathedral in the Americas anchors the old town and is a landmark of colonial architecture. Dress modestly, as it is an active church, and visit outside mass times.
