Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Cerro San Cristóbal

Santiago's green hill rises above the city and gives the classic panorama of the Andes and the urban sprawl. Ride the Teleférico or the funicular up and go early in the morning for clearer skies and shorter queues.

  2. 2

    La Moneda Palace

Chile's presidential palace is the political heart of the country and a handsome neoclassical landmark on the civic square. Free guided visits need booking ahead; otherwise admire it from the Plaza de la Constitución and catch the changing of the guard.

  3. 3

    Plaza de Armas of Santiago

The historic core of the city, ringed by the cathedral and colonial-era buildings, is the natural starting point for a walk. Come in the morning to see it before the crowds, and watch your belongings in the busy square.

  4. 4

    Sky Costanera

The observation deck atop South America's tallest building offers a 360-degree view over Santiago and the mountains beyond. Go near sunset for the best light, and buy tickets online to skip the line.

  5. 5

    Santa Lucia Hill

This small rocky hill in the center has terraces, fountains and a neo-classical lookout with fine city views. It is an easy, free stop on a walking day; climb in the morning before the heat.

  6. 6

    Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago

The city's main cathedral faces the Plaza de Armas and is worth a look for its colonial facade and richly decorated interior. Entry is free; dress modestly and visit outside mass times.

  7. 7

    Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino

One of Latin America's best collections of pre-Columbian art, housed in the old royal customs building. Allow a couple of hours; it is a short walk from the Plaza de Armas and closed on Mondays.

  8. 8

    Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception

The white statue of the Virgin crowns Cerro San Cristóbal and is a pilgrimage site with sweeping views. Combine it with the cable car or funicular ride up the hill and go on a clear day.

    Swap in instead

    • Add a day trip to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar: buses leave often from the city, roughly 1.5–2 hours each way. Check schedules on the day.
    • Swap a city afternoon for Cajón del Maipo in the Andes: book a tour or arrange transport, as public options are limited.
    • Wine lovers can spend a half-day at a Maipo Valley vineyard. Book ahead; many tastings need a reservation.

    Getting around

    • Metro: 7 lines, 136 stations; trains run roughly 06:00–23:00.
    • Pay metro and buses only with a bip! card; card costs about CLP 1,550 plus minimum CLP 1,000 recharge.
    • Fares run about CLP 640–800 by time of day; transfers within two hours are usually free.
    • Buses run around the clock on main lines; Red line 555 links Pajaritos metro to the airport.
    • Official taxis are black and yellow; Uber operates but is not officially licensed.
    • Bikes are popular on a growing lane network; no ferry service in the city.

    Where to stay

    • Centro Histórico · ≈ CLP 35,000–90,000 a night
Walk to the Plaza de Armas, La Moneda and the markets. Busiest and noisiest at night; keep valuables close.
    • Bellavista · ≈ CLP 45,000–110,000 a night
Colourful streets below Cerro San Cristóbal, close to La Chascona and nightlife. Lively, so pick a quiet side street.
    • Providencia · ≈ CLP 55,000–130,000 a night
Safe, leafy and well connected by Metro Line 1. Good mix of cafés, restaurants and shops.
    • Las Condes · ≈ CLP 70,000–180,000 a night
Modern, calm and close to the Sky Costanera and Parque Arauco. Farther from the old centre; rely on Metro or taxis.

    Food & drink

    • Eat seafood at the Mercado Central or Vega Central: try paila marina (shellfish stew) and reineta fish. Prices vary; check the menu before ordering.
    • Order a completo (hot dog with avocado, tomato and mayo) or an italiano sandwich at a local fuente de soda. Cheap and filling.
    • Try a pastel de choclo (corn pie) and empanadas de pino. Lunch is the big meal; many places offer a fixed menú at midday.
    • Coffee culture is strong: order a café or a cortado. For a sweet treat, look for mote con huesillo in summer.
    • Wine is a highlight. Ask for Chilean Carménère or Sauvignon Blanc by the glass, and consider a day trip to a nearby vineyard.

    Tips

    1. Get a 'Bip!' card to use the metro and bus network seamlessly
    2. The smog can be heavy in winter, so check air quality if you plan to hike the surrounding hills
    3. Tap water is safe to drink but has a high mineral content that some find unpalatable
    4. Chilean Spanish is notoriously fast and full of local slang (chilenismos)
    5. Try a 'completo' — a massive Chilean hot dog loaded with avocado, tomato, and mayo
