Must-see · 5

  1. 1

    National Theatre of Costa Rica

The country's grandest cultural building, an ornate 1897 theater with a gilded interior and marble lobby that is a symbol of San José's coffee-era wealth. It anchors the Plaza de la Cultura, so you can combine it with the museums nearby. Go on a weekday morning for guided tours and fewer crowds.

  2. 2

    Pre-Columbian Gold Museum

Houses a stunning collection of gold artifacts from Costa Rica's indigenous cultures, displayed in underground galleries beneath the Plaza de la Cultura. It is compact and easy to pair with the National Theatre. Buy tickets at the entrance and allow about an hour.

  3. 3

    National Museum of Costa Rica

Set in a former fortress with a butterfly garden and a bullet-marked wall, it tells the country's history from pre-Columbian times to the 1948 civil war. It is a short walk from the city center. Visit in the morning to avoid afternoon rain.

  4. 4

    Jade Museum

A well-organized museum with the largest collection of American jade, plus other pre-Columbian artifacts, in a modern building. It is a good rainy-day stop and close to the National Museum. Check opening hours, as it closes some days.

  5. 5

    Metallic Building

A striking prefabricated iron building from the late 19th century, shipped from Europe and now a cultural landmark in the city center. It is best seen from the outside and is a quick photo stop. Combine it with a walk through the nearby Mercado Central.
