Climate

Temperate maritime climate: mild summers, cool winters and rain in every month. Pack layers and a rain jacket year-round.

  • Rain all yearExpect 11–15 rain days every month. Showers pass quickly; a light rain jacket beats an umbrella in wind.
  • Mild summersJuly and August peak near 22–23°C. Rarely hot; evenings stay cool, so bring a layer.
  • Cool wintersDecember to February highs sit around 7–8°C with lows near 2°C. Wind off the river feels colder.
  • Windy cityIt is flat and open, so wind is common. A windproof jacket helps on bridges and boat trips.
  • Best months: May to SeptemberWarmest and brightest. May, June and September are the sweet spots for walking and cycling.
  • What to packLayers, a waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes for cobbles, and sunglasses for bright summer days.

  1. 1

    Erasmus Bridge

Rotterdam's modern icon, a striking white cable-stayed bridge over the Maas that has become the symbol of the rebuilt city. Walk or cycle across for free views of the skyline, and come at sunset or after dark when it is lit up.

  2. 2

    Cube Houses

A cluster of tilted, cube-shaped homes balanced on pillars, one of the city's most photographed modern sights. You can pay a small fee to visit the Show Cube museum inside; it is a short walk from Blaak station.

  3. 3

    Markthal

A huge arched market hall with a colourful ceiling mural, packed with food stalls, bars and shops. It is busiest at lunchtime, so go early morning or late afternoon for a calmer browse; it sits right beside the Cube Houses.

  4. 4

    Euromast

A tall observation tower offering the best panoramic view over Rotterdam and its port. Book tickets online to skip queues and go on a clear day; you can also take the rotating elevator up for an extra charge.
