Landmarks 39

Must-see · 10

  1. 1

    Colosseum

The world's most famous ancient amphitheater and Rome's defining icon, where gladiators once fought before 50,000 spectators. Book timed tickets online well in advance and go at opening time to beat the crowds and heat.

  2. 2

    St. Peter's Basilica

The heart of the Vatican and one of the largest churches on earth, home to Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's baldachin. Dress code is enforced (shoulders and knees covered), and early morning visits mean shorter security lines.

  3. 3

    Pantheon

A remarkably preserved 2,000-year-old temple with the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome and its famous oculus. Entry now requires a ticket; go early or late in the day for softer light and fewer people.

  4. 4

    Trevi Fountain

Rome's most theatrical fountain, where tossing a coin over your shoulder promises a return to the city. Visit before 8am or after dark to actually see the water rather than a wall of tourists.

  5. 5

    Roman Forum

The sprawling ruins of ancient Rome's political and civic heart, best combined with the Colosseum on a single ticket. Enter from the Via dei Fori Imperiali side and wear sturdy shoes for the uneven stones.

  6. 6

    Vatican Museums

A vast art collection culminating in the Sistine Chapel's frescoes by Michelangelo. Book a timed entry online weeks ahead; Wednesday mornings are busiest, and shoulders and knees must be covered.

  7. 7

    Spanish Steps

The grand 18th-century staircase linking Piazza di Spagna to the Trinità dei Monti church, a classic Rome gathering spot. Sitting on the steps is now forbidden by law; come at sunrise for photos without crowds.

  8. 8

    Piazza Navona

A Baroque showpiece square built on an ancient stadium, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers at its center. It is loveliest in the evening; note that cafés on the square charge premium prices.

  9. 9

    Castel Sant'Angelo

Hadrian's mausoleum turned papal fortress, connected to the Vatican by a secret passage, with a rooftop view over the Tiber. The terrace is a superb sunset spot; buy tickets online to skip the line.

  10. 10

    Altare della Patria

The imposing white monument to Italy's unification, dominating Piazza Venezia with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The terrace elevator gives one of Rome's best panoramic views; the monument itself is free to enter.

    Swap in instead

    • Swap a half-day for Ostia Antica: train from Piramide, about 30 minutes, to Roman ruins without the crowds.
    • Add a day trip to Tivoli for Villa d'Este gardens and Hadrian's Villa; trains and buses run from the city.
    • Art lovers can swap a museum morning for the Borghese Gallery; timed tickets sell out, so book ahead.

    Getting around

    • Metro has two main lines (A and B) plus a short branch; useful but limited coverage.
    • Trams and city buses fill the gaps; buy tickets before boarding.
    • Taxis use fixed airport fares and meters in town; Uber works in Rome.
    • Driving in the centre is chaotic and ZTL cameras fine you; don't do it.
    • Walking is the best way to see the centre; bikes and scooters are common.
    • No ferry needed in the city; cruise ships dock at Civitavecchia.

    Where to stay

    • Centro Storico · ≈ EUR 150–450 a night
Walk to the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain. Best for a first visit with little time.
    • Trastevere · ≈ EUR 110–320 a night
Cobbled lanes and dinner spots across the river. Lively at night, quieter by day.
    • Monti · ≈ EUR 120–350 a night
Small streets next to the Colosseum and Forum. Good mix of cafés, bars and local feel.
    • Prati / Vatican · ≈ EUR 130–400 a night
Close to St Peter's and the Vatican Museums. Calmer streets and good metro links.

    Food & drink

    • Order Roman classics: cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana and saltimbocca. Portions are big; a primo is often enough.
    • Pizza al taglio is sold by weight at counters. Point at what you want; pay about €3–6 for a good slice.
    • Coffee standing at the bar costs far less than sitting at a table. Cappuccino is a morning drink for locals.
    • Book dinner in Trastevere or Testaccio for a lively night. Many kitchens close mid-afternoon; eat lunch around 13:00.
    • Try a supplì (fried rice ball) and a scoop of gelato from a shop that keeps it covered, not piled high.

    Tips

    1. Book tickets for the Colosseum and Vatican Museums months in advance to avoid hours-long lines
    2. Never order a cappuccino after 11 AM; Italians consider it strictly a morning breakfast drink
    3. Carry a reusable water bottle to fill up at the thousands of free public fountains (nasoni) scattered around the city
    4. Dinner starts late, usually around 8:30 PM, and tipping is generally not expected or required
    5. Beware of aggressive ticket touts and pickpockets around major tourist sites and Termini station
