    • Edge of the World: a dramatic cliff viewpoint about 90 minutes' drive out; go with a tour or 4x4, not a normal sedan.
    • Swap a mall afternoon for Wadi Hanifah or Wadi Namar for a walk and picnic in cooler months.

    Getting around

    • Riyadh Metro has six lines, running about 06:00 to midnight; a 2-hour ticket is SR 4.
    • Metro day passes cost about SR 20 for 3 days, SR 40 for 7 and SR 140 for 30; tickets include Riyadh Bus rides.
    • Riyadh Bus is the main city bus network; fares start around SR 4.
    • Taxis are plentiful; metered trips in town usually cost under SR 30.
    • Uber and Careem work well; many locals negotiate flat fares of SR 10-15 for short hops.
    • Driving is the local norm; walking is hard in the north but easy in Al-Bathaa's alleys.

    Where to stay

    • Olaya · ≈ SAR 350–900 a night
Central business district. Walkable to Kingdom Centre, cafés and the metro; easy taxis to most sights.
    • KAFD · ≈ SAR 500–1,200 a night

    • Al-Bathaa · ≈ SAR 120–350 a night

    • Diplomatic Quarter · ≈ SAR 600–1,400 a night
Green, calm and embassies; upscale hotels and Wadi Hanifah walks nearby, but you need a car or taxi.

    Food & drink

    • Try Saudi staples: kabsa (spiced rice with lamb or chicken), jareesh and kleija sweets.
    • Al-Bathaa and the old souq area have cheap shawarma, falafel and Indian cafeterias, often under SR 25 a meal.
    • For a splurge, book a modern Saudi or Levantine restaurant in Olaya or the Diplomatic Quarter; reserve on weekends.
    • Coffee culture is big: local roasteries serve Arabic coffee (qahwa) with dates; try them at a specialty café.
    • Alcohol is not sold anywhere. Many restaurants close briefly at prayer times; check opening hours on the day.

    Tips

    1. Summer daytime heat is extreme, so most socializing and outdoor activities happen late at night
    2. Abayas are no longer legally required for foreign women, but modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is expected
    3. Check operating hours carefully, as some smaller shops still close during the five daily prayer times
    4. The city is experiencing rapid cultural changes, bringing new entertainment venues, concerts, and festivals
    5. Traffic can be very aggressive; rely on ride-hailing apps rather than driving yourself if unfamiliar
