Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Charles Bridge

Prague's most iconic sight, a 14th-century stone bridge lined with baroque statues and framed by the castle skyline. Go at sunrise to enjoy it before the crowds arrive, and note it is pedestrian-only.

  2. 2

    Prague Castle

The vast hilltop complex is the historic seat of Czech rulers and dominates the city's skyline. Book castle circuit tickets online and allow at least half a day; it is a steep uphill walk or a short tram ride from Lesser Town.

  3. 3

    Old Town Square

The heart of the old city, ringed by colorful facades and home to the famous astronomical clock. Come a few minutes before the hour to see the clock's apostles perform, but expect big crowds.

  4. 4

    St. Vitus Cathedral

A soaring Gothic cathedral inside Prague Castle with stunning stained glass and royal tombs. Dress respectfully and arrive early, as security lines at the castle grow quickly after mid-morning.

  5. 5

    Prague Astronomical Clock

A medieval mechanical marvel on the Old Town Hall that draws a crowd every hour for its moving figures. Stand to the side for a better view, and consider climbing the tower for rooftop views over the square.

  6. 6

    Petřín Lookout Tower

A miniature Eiffel-style tower on a green hill offering the best panorama of the city. Walk up through the park or take the funicular, then climb the stairs for the view on a clear day.

  7. 7

Church of Our Lady before Týn

The twin Gothic spires rising over Old Town Square are one of Prague's defining images. The interior is free to enter and quieter than the square outside; check opening hours before visiting.

  8. 8

    Dancing House

A playful modern landmark by the river designed by Gehry and Milunić. View it from the riverside embankment, and book ahead if you want to visit the rooftop bar for views.

    Swap in instead

    • Day trip to Kutná Hora: train from the main station, about an hour each way, to see the bone church and old town.
    • Swap one museum for a half-day at Vyšehrad: fortress walls, a cemetery of famous Czechs and river views.
    • Take a tram to Letná or Petřín for a park walk and a beer garden with a city view.

    Getting around

    • Metro has 3 lines (A, B, C) and runs roughly 05:00–24:00.
    • Trams cover the centre well; buy tickets at yellow machines or in apps.
    • A 90-minute ticket costs about 50 CZK; a 24-hour ticket about 150 CZK.
    • Ride apps Uber and Bolt work in Prague; use them to avoid taxi touts.
    • Driving in the centre is slow and parking is restricted; use P+R lots.
    • The centre is walkable; Charles Bridge and Old Town are best on foot.

    Where to stay

    • Staré Město · ≈ CZK 1,800–4,500 a night
Steps from Old Town Square and Charles Bridge. Walk to most sights; noisier at night.
    • Malá Strana · ≈ CZK 1,600–4,000 a night
Quiet cobbled lanes under the castle. Romantic and close to the bridge; fewer trams.
    • Vinohrady · ≈ CZK 1,200–2,800 a night
Leafy, local and full of cafés and restaurants. Good value; 15–20 minutes by tram or metro to the centre.
    • Nové Město · ≈ CZK 1,400–3,200 a night
Central and practical around Wenceslas Square. Main train station and metro nearby; busy streets.

    Food & drink

    • Try Czech classics: svíčková (beef in cream sauce), goulash with bread dumplings, and fried cheese.
    • Prague is famous for beer. A half-litre of local lager is often cheaper than a coffee; prices vary by pub.
    • Snack on a trdelník (chimney cake) from a street stall, or grab a chlebíček open sandwich from a deli.
    • Lunch menus (polední menu) at local pubs are the best value: a soup and main for a modest price.
    • Book popular dinner spots ahead for weekends. Many kitchens close early on Sunday.

    Tips

    1. Validate your transit ticket in the yellow machines before your first ride, or face steep fines
    2. Czech beer (Pilsner) is world-famous and often cheaper than bottled water in restaurants
    3. Avoid exchanging money at street kiosks in the tourist center to avoid terrible exchange rates; use ATMs
    4. The Astronomical Clock chimes every hour, but beware of pickpockets in the gathered crowd
    5. Wear comfortable, flat shoes; the beautiful cobblestone streets will destroy high heels
