Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Ribeira District

Porto's riverside old town is a UNESCO-listed maze of narrow lanes, tiled facades and cafes spilling toward the Douro. It is the heart of the city and the best place to start a first visit. Go early in the morning to enjoy it before the crowds, and wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and hills.

  2. 2

    Dom Luís I Bridge

This iron arch bridge is Porto's icon, linking the city with Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro. Walk the upper deck for sweeping views, especially at sunset. The lower deck connects to Ribeira, and the upper level is reached by metro or a steep walk.

  3. 3

    Livraria Lello

One of the world's most beautiful bookshops, with a sweeping red staircase and ornate woodwork that reportedly inspired Harry Potter. Book a timed ticket online in advance, as queues are long and entry is ticketed. It is a short walk from Clerigos Tower.

  4. 4

    Clerigos Tower

This baroque tower is the city's tallest landmark and offers a panoramic view over the rooftops after a climb of around 240 steps. Climb in the morning for clearer light and shorter lines. It sits in the center, near Livraria Lello and São Bento station.

  5. 5

    Palácio da Bolsa

The former stock exchange is famous for its lavish Arabian Hall and grand interiors. Guided visits are the only way in, so check times and book ahead. It is a few minutes' walk from Ribeira and São Francisco Church.

  6. 6

    Porto Cathedral

The city's Romanesque cathedral sits on a hilltop with a terrace overlooking the old town and river. It is a calm, historic stop and a good starting point for walking down to Ribeira. Dress respectfully and go early to avoid tour groups.
