Landmarks 12

Must-see · 5

  1. 1

    Panama Canal

The engineering marvel that made Panama famous, where ships rise and fall through the locks in a matter of minutes. The Miraflores Locks are the classic viewing spot, and ships are most frequent in the morning, so arrive early and check the day's transit schedule before you go.

  2. 2

    Casco Viejo

The restored colonial old town is the city's most atmospheric quarter, with plazas, churches and rooftop bars on the water's edge. Come in the late afternoon to walk the streets in cooler light, then stay for dinner; it is easily reached by taxi or rideshare from the modern center.

  3. 3

    Panama Viejo

The stone ruins of the original Spanish settlement are a UNESCO-listed archaeological site and a reminder of the city's violent colonial history. It is an open, sunny site with little shade, so bring water and a hat and go in the morning.

  4. 4

    BioMuseo

Frank Gehry's colorful museum tells the story of Panama's extraordinary biodiversity and is a striking piece of architecture in its own right. It sits on the Amador Causeway, so combine it with a walk or bike ride along the waterfront; buy tickets online to skip queues.

  5. 5

    Bridge of the Americas

The great arch spanning the canal at the Pacific entrance is a landmark of modern Panama and a favorite photo stop. It is best seen from the Amador Causeway at sunset, when the bridge and the canal traffic light up.
