Landmarks 10

Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Buyuk Han

The best-preserved Ottoman caravanserai on the island, a peaceful courtyard of arched rooms right in the old town. It is the most atmospheric stop in Nicosia and easy to combine with the nearby bazaar. Go in the morning for quiet courtyards, and remember it is a historic site, so dress respectfully.

  2. 2

    Selimiye Mosque, Nicosia

A former Gothic cathedral turned mosque, it is the landmark of the old city and a striking mix of Christian and Islamic architecture. Visit outside prayer times, cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering. It sits a short walk from Buyuk Han, so pair the two.

  3. 3

    Cyprus Museum

The country's main archaeological museum, holding finds from across the island and essential context before exploring further. Allow a couple of hours and check opening hours, as it closes on some public holidays. It is a short walk from the old town walls.

  4. 4

    Ledra Street crossing

The best-known pedestrian crossing between the Greek and Turkish sides of the divided capital, a must for understanding modern Nicosia. Bring your passport for the checkpoint and go on foot during daytime hours. The street itself is lively with shops and cafes.

  5. 5

    Omeriye Mosque

A historic mosque in the old town, converted from a church and still an active place of worship. It is a quiet, worthwhile stop near the bazaar. Dress modestly and avoid visiting during prayer times.

  6. 6

    Famagusta Gate

One of the old Venetian gates through the city walls, now used as a cultural venue. It is a good landmark for understanding the star-shaped fortifications. Visit in daylight and combine it with a walk along the walls.
