Landmarks 16

Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Promenade des Anglais

This long seafront promenade is the city's most famous walk, lined with palm trees, belle époque hotels and the pebble beach. It is best at sunset when the Baie des Anges glows. Walk it early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, and bring water.

  2. 2

    Vieux Nice

The Old Town is a maze of ochre and pastel buildings, narrow lanes, churches and small squares full of cafés. Its lively atmosphere and local food make it the heart of Nice. Wander without a map, and go in the evening when the lanes are busiest.

  3. 3

    Castle Hill (Colline du Château)

This hilltop park offers the best panoramic views over the bay, the Old Town and the harbour. It also has waterfalls, shaded paths and ruins of an old castle. Reach it by the lift or stairs from the Old Town, and visit at sunset for the views.

  4. 4

    Cours Saleya Market

This open-air market sells flowers, fresh produce, olives and local specialities, and is set among restaurants in the Old Town. It is busiest in the morning and is a good place to see daily Niçois life. Go before noon, as stalls thin out by early afternoon.

  5. 5

    Place Masséna

This grand, sunny square, with its red and ochre facades and fountains, is the gateway between the Old Town and the modern city. It is a popular meeting point and a good spot for a coffee break. It is easy to reach on foot or by tram.

  6. 6

    Musée Matisse

This museum in the Cimiez hills holds a large collection of works by Henri Matisse, who lived and worked in Nice for decades. The villa and gardens are as appealing as the art. Check opening hours before going, as the museum is closed on some days, and reach it by bus.

  7. 7

    Musée Marc Chagall

This museum sits in the Cimiez hills and houses the largest public collection of Marc Chagall's Biblical Message paintings. The setting among pine trees makes it a calm visit. Pair it with the Matisse museum nearby, and check the schedule ahead of time.

  8. 8

    Èze Village

This medieval hilltop village above the sea is one of the Riviera's best-known sights, with stone lanes, galleries and views down to the coast. It is a short trip from Nice and is usually visited by bus or guided tour. Go early to avoid the day-tripper crowds, and wear comfortable shoes for the steep paths.
