Landmarks 10

Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Oman's most impressive modern mosque, with a vast prayer hall, a huge hand-knotted carpet and a chandelier that draw visitors from across the region. Non-Muslims may visit in the morning on most days; dress modestly with covered arms, legs and hair for women, and arrive early to avoid the heat.

  2. 2

    Royal Opera House Muscat

A striking marble-and-wood opera house that is the cultural centerpiece of the city, worth seeing even outside performance times. Guided tours run on selected mornings; book ahead and check the schedule, as access depends on rehearsals.

  3. 3

    Al Alam Palace

The ceremonial palace of the Sultan, framed by distinctive blue and gold columns and set between two old forts. You cannot enter, but the exterior and surrounding plaza are a classic photo stop; go in the cooler early morning or late afternoon.

  4. 4

    Muttrah Souq

A maze of old lanes selling frankincense, silver, textiles and spices, one of the most atmospheric markets in the Gulf. Visit in the evening when it is liveliest and cooler, and bargain politely.

  5. 5

    Mutrah Corniche

A long waterfront promenade curving past the harbor, with views of the forts and the palace beyond. Best walked at sunset or early evening; it is free and connects easily to the souq.

  6. 6

    Qurum Beach

A broad sandy beach popular with locals for evening walks and picnics. Go late afternoon for cooler air; swimming is fine but check local advice and dress modestly away from the sand.

  7. 7

    Bait Al Zubair

A private museum of Omani heritage with costumes, weapons, jewelry and a reconstructed traditional house. A good introduction to local culture; check opening hours, as they vary by day and season.

  8. 8

Al Jalali & Al Mirani Forts

Twin Portuguese-era forts guarding the harbor, seen best from the corniche and souq area. They are generally not open for interior visits, so plan them as a viewpoint and photo stop rather than a tour.

    Souvenirs

    Hojari frankincense

    OMR 3–10100 g · estimate

Oman's signature scent: resin tears from Dhofar in the far south, burned at home and in every souq.

Where: Incense and spice stalls in Mutrah Souq
Price swings a lot by grade. Pale, translucent silver Hojari is the top grade; darker chips are cheaper.

    Pashmina shawl

OMR 25–801 wool or cashmere shawl · shop prices

Kashmiri shawls have been traded through Muscat's port for centuries and fill whole lanes of the souq.

Where: Textile shops in Mutrah Souq
Imported, not made in Oman. Ask whether it's a cashmere blend or 100%; very cheap ones are often synthetic.

    Omani halwa

    OMR 3–7About 500 g · estimate

A glossy, jelly-like sweet cooked for hours with saffron, cardamom and rosewater, served with coffee to every guest.

Where: Al Hosni Omani Sweets, Muscat branch
Check the nuts listed and the best-before date; plain tins travel best.
