Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Marienplatz

Munich's central square is the beating heart of the old town and the natural starting point for any first visit. Arrive a few minutes before the hour to watch the Glockenspiel figures in the Neues Rathaus tower re-enact a wedding and a barrel-maker's dance. It is a short walk from Marienplatz U-Bahn/S-Bahn station, and mornings are quieter than midday.

  2. 2

    Nymphenburg Palace

The sprawling baroque summer residence of the former Bavarian rulers, with a grand central pavilion and long formal gardens. Allow at least half a day to see the palace rooms and stroll the park pavilions. Take tram 17 to the Schloss Nymphenburg stop and buy a combined ticket if you plan to enter the pavilions.

  3. 3

    English Garden

One of the world's largest urban parks, with meadows, river surfers at the Eisbach wave and traditional beer gardens under the chestnut trees. It is free and open at all hours, so go early for calm paths or late afternoon for the liveliest atmosphere. The Chinesischer Turm beer garden is a good central rest stop.

  4. 4

    Munich Residenz

The former royal palace of the Wittelsbachs, a vast complex of courtyards, state rooms and the treasury filled with crown jewels and silver. The Antiquarium alone is worth the visit. It sits right by Marienplatz, so pair it with the old town; buy a combined ticket for the museum and treasury.

  5. 5

    Neues Rathaus

The neo-Gothic city hall dominates Marienplatz with its ornate facade and famous clock tower. Climb the tower lift for a close-up view over the square and rooftops. Go up shortly before the hour to see the Glockenspiel from above, and note the tower has a small entry fee.

  6. 6

    Allianz Arena

The glowing, cushion-shaped stadium home to Bayern Munich and a landmark of modern Munich architecture. Take a guided stadium tour or catch a match if your dates align; the arena is a short U-Bahn ride from the centre. Check the tour schedule ahead, as match days close the stadium to visitors.

    Swap in instead

    • Day trip to Neuschwanstein or the Alps: trains run from the main station; check times and buy tickets on the day or in advance.
    • Add a half-day at Nymphenburg Palace and its park; tram reaches it from the centre.
    • On a hot day, swap a museum for the Isar river banks or a swim at the English Garden's streams.

    Getting around

    • S-Bahn suburban trains link the airport and main stations; U-Bahn covers north-south routes.
    • Trams circle the inner city and reach Nymphenburg Palace; buses fill outer gaps.
    • One ticket works across S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus; validate before travel or risk a €60 fine.
    • Taxis are metered; ride apps like Uber and Bolt operate in Munich.
    • Driving is fine on the fringes but ring roads are often congested; use Park & Ride for day trips.
    • The centre is walkable and bike-friendly, with many cycle paths.

    Where to stay

    • Altstadt · ≈ EUR 130–320 a night
Walk to Marienplatz, the Residenz and the Viktualienmarkt. Best for a first visit with little time.
    • Maxvorstadt · ≈ EUR 110–260 a night
Museum quarter on the doorstep: Alte and Neue Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne. Quiet streets, 10–15 minutes' walk to the centre.
    • Ludwigsvorstadt · ≈ EUR 100–240 a night
Around the main station: easy airport S-Bahn, cheap hotels, short walk to the Altstadt and Theresienwiese.
    • Haidhausen · ≈ EUR 110–250 a night
Local feel east of the Isar: cafés, the Gasteig area and a short tram or walk to the centre. Good value.

    Food & drink

    • Try Bavarian classics: Weisswurst with sweet mustard before noon, roast pork with dumplings, and pretzels.
    • Beer gardens: sit outside with a Mass (1 litre) of beer and bring your own picnic if you like. Check opening months; many close in winter.
    • Viktualienmarkt in the Altstadt: stalls for cheese, bread, olives and snacks. Cheaper than restaurant lunches.
    • Lunch menus (Mittagsmenü) are good value, often EUR 10–16 for a main. Dinner mains run higher.
    • Book beer halls and popular restaurants on weekends. Tipping: round up or add about 5–10%.

    Tips

    1. Cash is still king in traditional beer gardens and smaller bakeries, though card use is growing
    2. Almost all retail shops and supermarkets are strictly closed on Sundays
    3. When in a beer garden, you can bring your own food as long as you buy drinks from the establishment
    4. Do not walk in the designated red bike lanes; cyclists move fast and will ring their bells aggressively
    5. Book accommodation up to a year in advance if planning to attend Oktoberfest
