Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Casino de Monte-Carlo

This 19th-century casino is the glamorous heart of Monaco, set in the Monte-Carlo quarter with a grand facade and ornate interiors. Even if you do not gamble, the building and its gardens are worth a look. Dress smartly for the gaming rooms and check opening times and entry rules before you go; the main room is typically the one you pay to enter.

  2. 2

    Prince's Palace of Monaco

The residence of the Grimaldi princes sits on the Rock of Monaco and gives the best views over the harbour. Visitors can see the State Apartments and the changing of the guard ceremony at noon. Arrive early in the day to avoid queues, and allow time for the walk up through the old town.

  3. 3

    Monaco Grand Prix Circuit

The street circuit that hosts the famous Formula One race winds through the city's streets, past the harbour and the casino. Outside race weekend you can walk or drive parts of the track and see the famous corners. Plan around the race calendar, since the streets are closed and crowded during the event.

  4. 4

    Oceanographic Museum

Founded by Prince Albert I, this museum combines marine science exhibits with an aquarium and a striking clifftop building. It is a good choice for families and rainy days. Buy tickets online ahead of peak season to skip the line.

  5. 5

    Saint Nicholas Cathedral

This Byzantine-style cathedral near the palace is the resting place of several Grimaldi princes, including Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. Its striking mosaics and quiet interior offer a break from the busy streets. Modest dress is expected when visiting.

  6. 6

    Port Hercule

Monaco's main harbour is packed with superyachts and is a pleasant place to watch the boats and the Rock behind them. Walk the quay in the early evening for the best light. Boat cruises depart from around the harbour area.
