  • Best time: May to SeptemberHighs of 21–28°C and little rain. Ideal for the port, beaches and calanques.
  • July and August are hotAround 28°C by day and 20–21°C at night. Sightsee in the morning; rest in the afternoon.

Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Notre-Dame de la Garde

Marseille's most famous sight, a hilltop basilica crowned by a golden statue of the Virgin that watches over the whole city and the sea. The climb rewards you with sweeping views over the harbor and the Calanques. Go early in the morning or near sunset for the best light and fewer crowds; you can walk up or take the bus.

  2. 2

    Calanques National Park

A dramatic stretch of limestone coves and turquoise water right at the city's edge, the reason many people fall in love with Marseille. Hiking the coastal trails or taking a boat trip is the classic way to see it. In summer some calanques close on hot, fire-risk days, so check access before you go and bring water.

  3. 3

    MuCEM

A striking modern museum on the waterfront, linked to the old Fort Saint-Jean by footbridges, devoted to Mediterranean cultures. Even if you skip the exhibitions, the building and rooftop views are worth the trip. The outdoor areas and fort are free to wander; go late afternoon for cooler air and harbor light.

  4. 4

    Cathédrale de la Major

A vast, striped Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral near the port, far bigger and more ornate than most visitors expect. It sits beside the MuCEM and the Joliette district, so it fits easily into a waterfront walk. Entry is free; dress respectfully and avoid visiting during services.

  5. 5

    Palais Longchamp

A grand 19th-century palace built around a monumental water fountain, with gardens and museums on either side. It is a favorite spot for a relaxed stroll away from the port crowds. Come in the morning for quiet gardens, and check museum opening days before planning a visit.

  6. 6

    Orange Velodrome

Marseille's iconic football stadium, home of Olympique de Marseille and famous for its roaring atmosphere on match days. Even outside games, it is a landmark of the city's sporting identity. Tickets for matches sell fast, so book well ahead and arrive early for the walk from the metro.

    Swap in instead

    • Take the boat to the Frioul islands (about €10 return) for a half-day of rocky coves and sea views.
    • Swap a city afternoon for Cassis by train: short ride, then a boat to the calanques if the sea is calm.
    • If you have a car-free day, ride bus and cable car up to Notre-Dame de la Garde for the best view; check opening hours on the day.

    Getting around

    • Metro: 2 lines, runs 05:00-00:30; tickets €1.70 single, €15 for 10.
    • Tram: 3 lines, runs until 00:30; same tickets as metro.
    • Buses: extensive network, but most stop after 21:00; night buses limited.
    • Taxis: available but beware of rogue drivers; ride apps like Uber work.
    • Driving: not recommended in centre; narrow streets and parking issues.
    • Bikes: le vélo scheme, €1/week, first 30 min free; few cycle paths.
    • Ferry: boat across Vieux-Port and to Frioul; €10 return.

    Where to stay

    • Vieux-Port · ≈ EUR 110–260 a night
The harbour is the city's front door: ferries, metro and most sights within walking distance.
    • Le Panier · ≈ EUR 90–220 a night
Old-town lanes above the port, close to MuCEM and the cathedral; quiet at night, steep streets.
    • La Canebière · ≈ EUR 80–190 a night
Central and cheaper, on the main boulevard between the port and the stations; busier and noisier.
    • Prado · ≈ EUR 100–230 a night
Beachside strip south of the centre; good for swimming and long walks, further from the old town.

    Food & drink

    • Try bouillabaisse once, but it is a proper sit-down meal: expect roughly €35–70 per person, and book ahead.
    • Cheaper and just as local: panisse (chickpea fries), navettes biscuits and a pastis at a port café.
    • Go to the fish market on the Quai des Belges at the Vieux-Port in the morning; it closes early.
    • Noailles market area is the place for cheap North African and Middle Eastern food, roughly €8–15 a meal.
    • Aperitif hour is a local ritual: many bars do cheaper drinks and small plates in the early evening.

    Tips

    1. Eat authentic Bouillabaisse (traditional fish stew) in the Old Port area
    2. Take a boat tour to the Calanques National Park for breathtaking limestone cliffs and blue water
    3. Explore the historic Le Panier neighborhood for street art and narrow alleys
    4. Be cautious of belongings in crowded areas and around the port
    5. Enjoy the vibrant, multi-ethnic atmosphere that makes it distinct from other French cities
