Landmarks 8

Must-see · 7

  1. 1

    Puerto Salvador Allende

Managua's lakeside urban hub and the city's best-known gathering spot, with restaurants, a boardwalk and views over Lake Xolotlán. Go in the late afternoon for cooler air and sunset over the water; it's a short taxi ride from the center and best avoided after dark.

  2. 2

    Old Cathedral of Managua

The earthquake-ruined shell of the old cathedral is Managua's most striking historic sight and a symbol of the 1972 quake. View it from the plaza outside; it is not open for regular visits, so plan a quick photo stop rather than a tour inside.

  3. 3

    Loma de Tiscapa

A hilltop park with the giant Sandino silhouette statue and sweeping views across the city and lake. Come in the morning for clearer skies and cooler temperatures, and take a taxi up rather than walking.

  4. 4

    National Palace of Culture, Managua

A handsome historic building on the Plaza de la Revolución housing museums and murals. Check opening hours before you go, as they can be limited, and combine it with a walk around the plaza.

  5. 5

    National Museum of Nicaragua

The country's main museum, with archaeology, history and art exhibits that give context to the city. Allow an hour or two and confirm opening days, which vary.

  6. 6

    Paseo Xolotlán

A lakeside promenade with sculptures, small attractions and lake views, popular with local families. Visit in the early evening and stick to the busier sections.

  7. 7

    Masaya Artisan Market

A market known for crafts, hammocks and souvenirs, useful for gifts. Bring small bills and be ready to bargain politely; it's best reached by taxi or as part of a day trip toward Masaya.
