Landmarks 19

Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Ruins of St. Paul's

The facade of this 17th-century Jesuit church is the most photographed image in Macau and a symbol of the city's Portuguese heritage. It stands at the top of a steep granite stairway, with a museum of Christian art beneath it. Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the largest crowds, and wear comfortable shoes for the climb.

  2. 2

    Senado Square

This paved square in the Historic Centre is lined with pastel colonial buildings and mosaic pavements. It is the easiest place to start a walk through the old town and to see the local mix of Portuguese and Chinese architecture. Go in the evening, when the buildings are lit and the square is lively, and reach it on foot from Ruins of St. Paul's.

  3. 3

    Guia Fortress

This 16th-century fort sits on Guia Hill and offers the best panoramic views over the old town and the peninsula. The chapel inside is one of the oldest surviving structures of its kind in the city. Take a bus or taxi up, or walk the hill path, and go before sunset for the views.

  4. 4

    A-Ma Temple

Dedicated to A-Ma, the sea goddess who is honoured as the protector of fishermen and sailors, this temple is said to give the city its name. Its granite courtyards and incense-filled halls are a good contrast to the colonial sights nearby. Go early on a weekday, dress modestly, and bring small change for the incense and offerings.

  5. 5

    Macau Tower

At 338 metres, this tower offers observation decks and a revolving restaurant with sweeping views over the city and the Pearl River Delta. The Sky Walk and bungy jumping are popular for thrill-seekers. Book observation tickets online ahead of time, especially for evening slots and weekends.

  6. 6

    Taipa Houses

These restored Portuguese-era houses on Taipa Island are now a small museum and cultural space that shows how the island's residents lived. They pair well with a stroll through nearby Taipa Village and its street market. Take a short taxi or bus ride from the Historic Centre and allow an hour or two.
