    Swap in instead

    • Add a day for Badagry: old slave-trade sites and the coast, a long drive west of the city.
    • Take a short boat trip to Tarkwa Bay or a Lekki beach for a slower day by the Atlantic.
    • Music fans can spend an evening at a live afrobeats or highlife venue; ask your hotel for a safe, current recommendation.

    Getting around

    • Blue Line rail runs Marina to Mile 2; fare about ₦375, Cowry Card only.
    • BRT buses use dedicated lanes; cash not accepted, buy a Cowry Card (₦500-1,000).
    • Yellow danfo minibuses cover most routes; fares start around ₦50 and rise with distance.
    • Ride apps like Uber and Bolt work widely; taxis are metered or negotiated.
    • Okadas (motorbike taxis) are quick but risky and banned in many districts and after dark.
    • Ferries link Lagos Island, Banana Island, Mile 2 and the mainland; walking is best in a few central areas only.

    Where to stay

    • Victoria Island · ≈ NGN 70,000–200,000 a night
Central for business, restaurants and the Landmark beach; easy to reach Ikoyi and Lagos Island.
    • Ikoyi · ≈ NGN 90,000–280,000 a night
Quiet, leafy and upscale; close to the museums and good restaurants. Good for couples and business.
    • Lekki · ≈ NGN 45,000–180,000 a night
Beach clubs, nightlife and many mid-range stays. Traffic can be heavy; pick a place near your plans.
    • Ikeja GRA · ≈ NGN 35,000–120,000 a night
Near the airport and quieter at night. Cheaper, but far from the beaches and island sights.

    Food & drink

    • Try Nigerian classics: jollof rice, egusi soup with pounded yam, and pepper soup. Portions are big.
    • Suya (grilled spiced beef skewers) is a street favourite; buy from busy stalls in the evening.
    • Lagos does great seafood: grilled fish, prawns and catfish pepper soup near the water.
    • Cheap eats: buka (local canteens) serve rice and stew for a few hundred naira; check prices on the day.
    • Street food and tap water are risky for some stomachs. Drink bottled water and eat where it is busy and freshly cooked.

    Tips

    1. Traffic jams (known locally as 'go-slows') are notorious; plan heavy buffer times for travel
    2. Use Uber or Bolt for transit rather than navigating the Danfo buses or hailing street taxis
    3. The city has an incredible music and nightlife scene, especially on Victoria Island and Lekki
    4. Be cautious of your surroundings and avoid walking at night in unfamiliar areas
    5. Power outages can occur, so ensure your accommodation has a reliable backup generator

      Souvenirs

      Adire fabric scarf

NGN 8000–250001 cotton scarf · estimate

Adire is a traditional Yoruba resist-dyeing method, and Lagos is one of its best-known centers. Each scarf shows patterns made by tying, folding, or stitching the cloth before dyeing.

Where: Lekki Arts & Crafts Market or PR Fabrics, Lekki Phase 1
Check that the colors do not run by rubbing a damp corner of the cloth on white paper.

      Aso oke accessory

NGN 10000–300001 small pouch or stole · estimate

Aso oke is a narrow-strip woven cloth from the Yoruba people, often worn at celebrations. Lagos is a major place to see and buy it, and small pieces make easy gifts.

      Where: Nike Art Gallery, Lekki
Ask whether the cloth is hand-woven and locally made, since machine-made copies are common.
