    Swap in instead

    • Swap a temple morning for a day trip to Nara: about 45 minutes by train, with deer park and the Great Buddha.
    • Add Uji for green tea and the Byodo-in temple, roughly 30 minutes by train from Kyoto Station.
    • Fushimi Inari's full hill walk takes 2–3 hours. Go early morning to beat the crowds.

    Getting around

    • Two subway lines (Karasuma and Tozai) cover central Kyoto; fares ¥220-330.
    • City buses reach most sights; flat fare ¥230, day pass ¥700.
    • Taxis are metered; ride-hailing apps like GO and Uber operate.
    • Driving is not recommended; parking is scarce and expensive.
    • Walking and cycling are ideal for temples and backstreets; bike rentals from ¥1000/day.
    • No ferry service in Kyoto.

    Where to stay

    • Kyoto Station · ≈ JPY 8,000–25,000 a night
Best base for first-timers: bullet trains, buses and the subway all start here. Easy day trips to Nara and Osaka.
    • Downtown (Shijo-Kawaramachi) · ≈ JPY 9,000–30,000 a night
Central shopping and dining. Walk to Gion, Pontocho and Nishiki Market; good bus links.
    • Gion · ≈ JPY 12,000–45,000 a night
Old wooden streets and lantern-lit lanes. Quiet at night, close to Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine.
    • Arashiyama · ≈ JPY 10,000–35,000 a night
Bamboo grove and river views on your doorstep. Calm and green, but a train ride from the center.

    Food & drink

    • Try Kyoto home cooking (obanzai) and yudofu, a simple hot-pot tofu dish served at temple restaurants.
    • Nishiki Market is a covered food street: graze on pickles, tamagoyaki and skewers. Many stalls close by late afternoon.
    • Kaiseki is the city's fine-dining tradition. Lunch sets cost far less than dinner; book ahead.
    • Matcha everything: tea, sweets and soft serve in Uji and around the temples.
    • Standing noodle bars and ramen shops near Kyoto Station are cheap and fast, often under ¥1000 a bowl.

    Tips

    1. Temples like Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera are crowded; visit early in the morning
    2. Respect local customs and do not photograph geisha without permission in Gion
    3. Bicycle rental is the most local and convenient way to see the city's many hidden spots
    4. Try 'Kaiseki', a traditional multi-course haute cuisine unique to Kyoto
    5. Purchase a bus pass for unlimited travel, as buses serve most tourist destinations
