    Swap in instead

    • Swap a city day for the Batu Caves in the morning, then the Forest Research Institute trails in the afternoon.
    • Take a day trip to Melaka or the Genting Highlands; buses and trains run from KL Sentral — check times on the day.
    • Add a night in the Cameron Highlands for cool air and tea plantations if you want a break from the heat.

    Getting around

    • RapidKL metro lines 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12 cover most sights; trains every 2-7 min.
    • KTM lines 1, 2, 10 and ERL lines 6, 7 link KL Sentral to suburbs and the airport.
    • Touch 'n Go card costs RM10 plus top-up; contactless cards work on KTM and ERL only.
    • Buses are cheap but slow; use them for short hops off the rail grid.
    • Grab is the main ride app; taxis are metered but agree the fare first.
    • Driving is stressful in jams; walking is fine in the centre but pavements are patchy.

    Where to stay

    • KLCC · ≈ MYR 250–700 a night
Walk to the Petronas Towers and the park. Best metro links and easy airport train from KL Sentral.
    • Bukit Bintang · ≈ MYR 180–550 a night
Malls, street food and nightlife on your doorstep. Central for walking to many sights.
    • Chinatown · ≈ MYR 90–300 a night
Cheapest base for food and markets. Close to Merdeka Square and the old town.
    • Brickfields · ≈ MYR 120–350 a night
Little India near KL Sentral, so airport trains and metro are minutes away. Good value.

    Food & drink

    • Eat at hawker centres: Jalan Alor for grilled skewers and seafood, and Lot 10 Hutong for classic stalls in air-conditioning.
    • Try nasi lemak, char kway teow, laksa and roti canai. A hawker meal is often around RM 8–20.
    • Mamak restaurants (Indian-Muslim) are open late and cheap. Good for supper after a night out.
    • Chinatown and Petaling Street for noodles, dumplings and fresh juice; check prices before ordering seafood.
    • Alcohol is pricey and limited outside bars and hotels. Many places are halal; look for the sign.

    Tips

    1. Touch 'n Go cards are widely used for public transit and toll payments
    2. Weather can change quickly; always carry an umbrella for sudden afternoon downpours
    3. Street food in Jalan Alor is vibrant but expect it to be slightly tourist-priced
    4. Dress modestly when visiting mosques or temples
    5. Use ride-hailing apps like Grab instead of hailing taxis from the street to avoid overcharging
