Getting around

Ride apps (Careem, InDrive) for most trips; agree fares for taxis and use the BRT where it runs.

Landmarks 9

Must-see · 5

  1. 1

    Clifton Beach

Karachi's best-known seaside stretch and the city's social heart, busy with families, camel rides and food stalls in the evening. Go around sunset on a weekday to avoid the biggest crowds, and dress modestly as it is a conservative public beach.

  2. 2

    Empress Market

A grand colonial-era covered market and the city's most famous landmark, packed with spice, meat, fruit and textile stalls. Visit in the cooler morning hours, keep valuables close in the crowds, and bring small cash for bargaining.

  3. 3

    Mohatta Palace Museum

A striking pink-stone palace turned museum showing art and history exhibitions in elegant halls and gardens. Check opening days before you go, as it is closed on some weekdays, and allow an hour or two to walk the grounds.

  4. 4

    Frere Hall

A handsome colonial building with a library and a leafy garden, known for its Sadequain mural inside. It is a calm stop in the busy city centre; go in the morning and dress respectfully since it is a public institution.

  5. 5

    Pakistan Maritime Museum

A family-friendly museum with ships, submarines and naval exhibits that explains Pakistan's maritime history. It suits a half-day outing with children; confirm ticket prices and timings locally before travelling there.

    Swap in instead

    • Add a half-day for the Chaukhandi Tombs near Landhi, an old carved-stone cemetery, best with a hired car and driver.
    • History fans can swap a beach afternoon for Mohatta Palace Museum and the nearby Frere Hall in the old city.
    • Shop for textiles and handicrafts at the Empress Market area and Zamzama boutiques; bargain politely.

    Getting around

    • No metro or tram; a bus rapid transit (BRT) line runs on some corridors.
    • City buses and minibuses are cheap but crowded and confusing for newcomers.
    • Ride apps Careem and InDrive work widely; Uber coverage is limited.
    • Metered taxis are rare; agree the fare before you ride.
    • Driving yourself is stressful; hiring a car with driver is common.
    • Walking is hard outside a few areas; no ferry service for visitors.

    Where to stay

    • Saddar · ≈ PKR 6,000–18,000 a night
Central and cheap; close to the Empress Market, old bazaars and the colonial-era streets. Basic hotels, busy and noisy.
    • Clifton · ≈ PKR 15,000–40,000 a night
Near the seafront, Clifton Beach and good restaurants. A safe, easy base for first-timers.
    • Defence (DHA) · ≈ PKR 20,000–55,000 a night
Quiet, upmarket and green, with malls and cafés. Further from the old city sights.
    • Gulshan-e-Iqbal · ≈ PKR 8,000–22,000 a night
Mid-range hotels and food streets; handy for the airport side of town but far from the sea.

    Food & drink

    • Try Sindhi and Karachi biryani, plus BBQ (seekh kebab, tikka) at the food streets in Gulshan and Clifton.
    • Street snacks: chaat, samosas, gol gappay and bun kebab. Eat where locals queue and where food is cooked hot and fresh.
    • Seafood near the harbour and Clifton: grilled fish and prawns. Ask the price per kilo before ordering.
    • Nihari and haleem are breakfast or late-night classics. Many places open early and stay open past midnight.
    • Drink bottled or filtered water only. Skip ice and raw salads at cheap street stalls if your stomach is sensitive.

    Tips

    1. Traffic is notoriously chaotic and heavily congested during peak hours
    2. Use ride-hailing apps like InDrive or Uber to avoid haggling and ensure safety
    3. The street food scene is legendary, but only drink bottled water to avoid illness
    4. Stay highly vigilant with your belongings, especially smartphones, in crowded areas or traffic jams
    5. Visit Clifton Beach or Do Darya for ocean views and upscale dining
