    Food & drink

    • Try Pakistani classics: chicken karahi, seekh kebabs, haleem and biryani. Portions are big; share.
    • Look for a local 'food street' area for grilled meat and parathas in the evening; ask your hotel which is closest.
    • Melt-in-mouth nihari and halwa puri are traditional breakfasts; go early before they sell out.
    • Vegetarians are well served: daal, chana, saag and paneer dishes are on most menus.
    • Tap water is not safe to drink. Stick to bottled or filtered water, and skip ice if unsure.

    Tips

    1. Hike the well-maintained trails of the Margalla Hills for excellent views over the city
    2. Visit the Faisal Mosque, a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture
    3. The city is divided into neat sectors (e.g., F-6, F-7) which have their own commercial centers (Markaz)
    4. It is noticeably quieter, cleaner, and more orderly than other major Pakistani cities
    5. Dress conservatively and respect local Islamic customs
