Landmarks 16

Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Charminar

The 16th-century four-minaret arch that is Hyderabad's defining icon and the heart of the old city. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds, and dress modestly if you climb to the upper level. It sits right beside Laad Bazaar and Mecca Masjid, so you can see all three on foot.

  2. 2

    Golconda Fort

A vast hilltop fortress famous for its acoustics, ramparts and views over the city. Allow two to three hours for the climb and bring water and sun protection; the sound-and-light show in the evening is a popular add-on. It is a short taxi ride from the old city.

  3. 3

    Mecca Masjid

One of India's largest and oldest mosques, built under the Qutb Shahi rulers and standing next to Charminar. Visitors should cover shoulders and legs and remove shoes; non-Muslims can usually view the courtyard outside prayer times. Combine it with a walk through Laad Bazaar.

  4. 4

    Chowmahalla Palace

The elegant former seat of the Nizams, with courtyards, a clock tower and vintage car collections. It is a calm, well-kept stop near Charminar and takes about an hour; check opening days before you go as it closes on some weekdays.

  5. 5

    Salar Jung Museum

A huge, eclectic collection assembled by one family, from sculpture to clocks and manuscripts. It is a good indoor option in the afternoon heat and needs at least two hours; it sits across the river from the old city.

  6. 6

    Hussain Sagar Buddha statue

A giant standing Buddha on an island in Hussain Sagar Lake, best seen from the lakeside promenade or by boat. Sunset is the most comfortable time, and the Tank Bund road is an easy taxi or auto-rickshaw ride from the center.

  7. 7

    Qutb Shahi Tombs

A quiet complex of domed royal tombs near Golconda Fort, among the best-preserved of their kind in India. Pair it with a Golconda visit since they are close together, and go in the cooler morning hours.

  8. 8

    Birla Mandir

A white marble Hindu temple on a hill with wide views over the city and lake. It is free to enter, shoes are left outside, and evenings are pleasant; it is a short ride from Hussain Sagar.

    • Ramoji Film City is a full day out. Check tour times and ticket prices on the day.
    • Swap one city day for a trip to Golconda Fort at sunset, then dinner in Banjara Hills.

    Getting around

    • Metro is fast and clean: Red, Blue and Green lines, 57 stations, trains every ~4 min.
    • Metro fares run from ₹10 to about ₹60 end to end.
    • TSRTC buses are cheap but crowded; routes are shown in English too.
    • Ola and Uber work well; cabs cannot be hailed on the street.
    • Auto-rickshaws need a fare agreed first; minimum ₹20 for 1.6 km, then about ₹11/km.
    • Driving is for the brave; traffic jams are common at rush hour.

    Where to stay

    • Banjara Hills · ≈ INR 2,500–9,000 a night
Central and leafy. Close to good restaurants, malls and the road to Golconda. Easy for first-timers.
    • Jubilee Hills · ≈ INR 3,000–12,000 a night
Upscale dining and nightlife. Quiet streets, good for couples and business travellers.
    • HITEC City · ≈ INR 2,200–8,000 a night
Modern hotels near the tech offices. Good metro links, but far from the old city sights.
    • Secunderabad · ≈ INR 1,500–6,000 a night
Near the railway station and airport road. Cheaper rooms and a real local feel.

    Food & drink

    • Try Hyderabadi biryani: dum-cooked rice with mutton or chicken. Portions are big; one plate often feeds two.
    • Haleem is the Ramadan favourite, but many places sell it year-round. Slow-cooked wheat and meat, served hot.
    • Irani chai and Osmania biscuits at old cafés in the old city. Cheap and a local ritual.
    • Street snacks: mirchi ka salan, lukhmi and samosas near Charminar. Eat where locals queue.
    • Vegetarian thalis and Andhra meals are easy to find. Ask for less chilli if you are not used to heat.

    Tips

    1. Eating authentic Hyderabadi Biryani is an absolute must; it is culturally distinct and deeply beloved
    2. Visit the historic Charminar and Laad Bazaar in the Old City, but be prepared for intense crowds
    3. Use the Metro to bypass heavy road traffic between the historical sites and the modern IT corridors
    4. The city is known as the 'City of Pearls' due to its long history as a major pearl and diamond trading center
    5. Uber and Ola are the easiest ways to travel by car or auto-rickshaw
