    Swap in instead

    • Add a day on Lantau: Ngong Ping cable car and the Big Buddha, or the beach at Cheung Sha.
    • Swap a city afternoon for a ferry to one of the outlying islands; check the timetable on the day.
    • Hikers can spend a day on the Dragon's Back or MacLehose Trail sections; bring water and start early.

    Getting around

    • MTR metro is fast and covers most sights; use an Octopus card.
    • Trams on Hong Kong Island are cheap and scenic.
    • Buses and minibuses reach beaches and hills; tap Octopus on boarding.
    • Taxis are red for the city; Uber works but supply is limited.
    • Driving is stressful; parking is scarce and costly.
    • Walking is best in dense districts; the Star Ferry crosses the harbour cheaply.

    Where to stay

    • Tsim Sha Tsui · ≈ HKD 500–1,800 a night
Best first-timer base: Star Ferry, museums and the skyline view from the promenade. Lots of mid-range rooms.
    • Central · ≈ HKD 800–2,800 a night
Heart of the city: MTR, trams, bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Pricier and busier.
    • Causeway Bay · ≈ HKD 600–2,000 a night
Shopping and food at every price, good tram and MTR links. Lively but crowded.
    • Mong Kok · ≈ HKD 400–1,300 a night
Cheapest of the four, with street markets and cheap eats. Very dense and noisy.

    Food & drink

    • Start with dim sum for breakfast or lunch; busy local halls are cheaper than hotel restaurants.
    • Try a cha chaan teng (cafe) for milk tea, pineapple buns and noodles; expect roughly HKD 40–80 a meal.
    • Street food in Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po: fish balls, egg waffles and tofu pudding, mostly under HKD 30.
    • Seafood at Sai Kung or Lei Yue Mun: pick your fish and agree the price and cooking method first.
    • Book popular restaurants ahead, especially on weekends. Many small places are cash-only; check on the day.

    Tips

    1. Octopus card works on all MTR, buses, ferries, and many stores.
    2. The Star Ferry (HK$3) between Central and Kowloon is one of the world's great cheap rides.
    3. Dim sum is best enjoyed at lunch — local cha chaan tengs (tea houses) beat tourist spots.
    4. Hiking trails with stunning city views are plentiful — Lion Rock and Dragon's Back are iconic.
    5. Weather in summer is hot and humid; typhoon season (June–October) can disrupt plans.
