Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Lord Bao Park

The city's best-known sight, a leafy park built around the memorial to Bao Zheng, the incorruptible Song-dynasty official who is a folk hero across China. Come early morning to watch locals doing tai chi, and allow an hour or two to walk the grounds and the memorial halls.

  2. 2

    Sanhe Ancient Town

A well-preserved water town of old lanes, stone bridges and traditional houses about an hour outside Hefei, the best place nearby to see Anhui's historic architecture. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds and wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets.

  3. 3

    Anhui Museum

The leading museum in the province, strong on Anhui history, calligraphy and regional culture, and a good rainy-day option. It is free to enter with ID, but check opening days since many Chinese museums close on Mondays.

  4. 4

    Li Hongzhang Former Residence

The family home of Li Hongzhang, the late-Qing statesman, giving a window into 19th-century official life in Hefei. It is compact, so pair it with a walk in the surrounding old streets.

  5. 5

    Xiaoyaojin Park

A central park with a lake, gardens and a famous name from the Three Kingdoms era, popular with local families. Best in spring and autumn; it is an easy stroll from the city centre.

  6. 6

    Swan Lake

A modern lakeside area with open views and a skyline backdrop, good for an evening walk. Go around sunset when the light is best and the waterfront is liveliest.
