Getting around

Uber or a yellow metered taxi for most trips; Transmetro for cheap rides on main routes.

  • MetroNo metro. Transmetro is a bus rapid transit system, not rail.
  • Bus ★Transmetro BRT has 7 lines. Pay with the Citizen's Card (Q20 with 5 trips) or a contactless card; cash is not accepted. Transurbano buses need a prepaid card and are slower but cover more routes. Avoid red city buses.

Must-see · 8

  1. 1

National Palace of Culture, Guatemala City

The grand green-tiled presidential palace on the Plaza de la Constitución is the city's civic icon, with murals and ceremonial halls worth a look. Go on a weekday morning when guided interior visits are most reliable, and bring photo ID for security.

  2. 2

    Metropolitan Cathedral of Guatemala City

The twin-towered cathedral anchors the historic center and shelters colonial-era art and crypts. Visit early in the day to avoid crowds and dress modestly, as it is an active church.

  3. 3

    Plaza de la Constitución

This broad central square links the palace and cathedral and is the best starting point for a walk through Zona 1. Come in the morning or late afternoon for cooler weather and livelier street life.

  4. 4

    Zona 1 historic center

The old grid of streets holds the city's main monuments, markets and faded grandeur, best explored on foot. A weekday stroll with a map or guide is the safest and most rewarding way to see it.

  5. 5

    Kaminaljuyu

One of the few visible remnants of the ancient Maya city beneath modern Guatemala City, with grassy mounds and a small site museum. Go in the morning; it is a short taxi ride from the center and rarely crowded.

  6. 6

Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología

The country's premier collection of Maya artifacts and regional ethnography, essential context before visiting Tikal or Antigua. Allow two hours; it is closed on Mondays, so check hours before you go.

  7. 7

    Popol Vuh Museum

A compact but superb private collection of Maya ceramics and sculpture housed at a university. It is quiet on weekdays and pairs well with a visit to the nearby zoo area.

  8. 8

    La Aurora Zoo

A large, well-kept city zoo with regional wildlife and family-friendly paths, popular with locals on weekends. Arrive at opening to see animals active and avoid midday heat.

    Swap in instead

    • Swap a city day for Antigua Guatemala: colonial streets and volcano views, roughly an hour by road. Check bus and shuttle times on the day.
    • Add Lake Atitlán or Chichicastenango market as an overnight, not a day trip. Roads are slow; book a shuttle.
    • Maya history fans: the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología in Zona 13 pairs well with a half-day at the relief map (Mapa en Relieve) in Zona 2.

    Getting around

    • Transmetro BRT: 7 lines, use Citizen's Card (Q20 with 5 trips) or contactless card; cash not accepted.
    • Transurbano buses: prepaid card needed; slower but more routes.
    • Red city buses are unsafe; avoid.
    • Taxis: yellow metered (call 1766) or white negotiate price; Uber works.
    • Driving: chaotic traffic; rental cars available but not recommended for city driving.
    • Walking: use caution; accompanied walking advised.

    Where to stay

    • Zona 10 · ≈ GTQ 450–1,200 a night
Modern, safest-feeling base. Hotels, restaurants and malls within walking distance; easy taxi and ride-app pickups.
    • Zona 9 · ≈ GTQ 350–900 a night
Next to Zona 10 and the Torre del Reformador area. Quieter streets, still close to dining and nightlife.
    • Zona 1 · ≈ GTQ 200–600 a night
Historic center: Plaza Mayor, the cathedral and the National Palace. Cheapest, but use care on foot, especially after dark.
    • Zona 4 · ≈ GTQ 300–800 a night
Trendy, walkable pocket of cafés, bars and galleries. Good for nightlife and food; book ahead on weekends.

    Food & drink

    • Try Guatemalan staples: pepián (thick spiced stew), kak'ik (turkey soup), tamales and chuchitos.
    • Mercado Central in Zona 1: cheap comedores and fresh produce. Go with a local or in a group; keep valuables out of sight.
    • Breakfast: eggs, black beans, plantain and thick tortillas. Cafés in Zona 4 and Zona 10 do good coffee.
    • Street snacks: tostadas, shucos (hot dogs with toppings) and rellenitos (plantain with bean paste). Eat where locals queue.
    • Prices vary. Budget roughly Q30–80 for a simple meal and Q150+ at mid-range restaurants. Check the bill for service charges.

    Tips

    1. Stick to safer, more affluent areas like Zona 4, 10, 14, and 15, especially at night
    2. Use Uber rather than hailing street taxis for safety and transparent pricing
    3. The climate is pleasantly mild year-round, but evenings can be crisp, so bring a light jacket
    4. Zona 4 is the trendy, hipster district full of street art, coffee shops, and breweries
    5. Many travelers use the city primarily as a gateway to Antigua, Lake Atitlán, or Tikal
