Landmarks 7

Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Rock of Gibraltar

The limestone promontory dominates the town and gives the territory its identity. Its upper slopes are a nature reserve, home to the famous Barbary macaques, and it offers wide views across the Strait toward Africa. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the paths are steep and exposed.

  2. 2

    St. Michael's Cave

A large natural limestone cave system in the Upper Rock, known for its dramatic chambers and lighting. It is one of the most popular stops on the Rock. Go early in the day to avoid the midday crowds, and expect some steps and uneven ground.

  3. 3

    Gibraltar Great Siege Tunnels

A network of tunnels cut into the rock during the Great Siege of the 1780s, used for guns and observation. They give a vivid picture of the territory's military history. Book a guided visit where possible and allow around an hour.

  4. 4

    Moorish Castle

A fortification whose origins go back to Moorish rule, with later additions from other periods. It sits on the western slopes near the town and is well suited to a relaxed walk with views. Visit in the morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler.

  5. 5

    Gibraltar Cable Car

The cable car carries visitors from the town up to the Upper Rock, saving a steep climb and giving sweeping views. It is the simplest way to reach the top. Buy tickets online ahead of busy periods and check the schedule for wind closures.

  6. 6

    Main Street & Casemates Square

The pedestrian Main Street is the heart of the old town, lined with shops, cafes and British-style buildings. Casemates Square is a lively gathering point with restaurants. Visit in the evening when the square is busiest.

    • Add a half-day for the Great Siege Tunnels and Trafalgar Cemetery. Both suit history fans and fit easily with a cable car trip.

    Getting around

    • Citibus (routes 5 and 10) and Gibraltar Bus Company (other routes) run the buses. Single fares start at £1.00 to £1.80.
    • Bus fares are flat, so distance does not change the price. Gibraltar Bus needs exact change or card; Citibus takes cash only.

    • Driving is on the right. Much of the old centre has narrow, one-way streets and very limited parking, so park in La Línea and walk across the border.
    • Walking covers most of the town. A cable car links the town with the Upper Rock, and a cruise port sits at the western end of Waterport Road.

    Where to stay

Near the lighthouse, Europa Point mosque and Trafalgar Cemetery. Quieter, with sea views but fewer restaurants.
    • Ocean Village · ≈ USD 150–350 a night
Marina hotels and restaurants close to the cruise port. Good for sunset walks and evening dining.

    Food & drink

    • Try local Gibraltarian dishes such as calentita (chickpea flour cake) and rabo de toro (oxtail stew) in old-town restaurants.
    • Tapas bars along Main Street and Irish Town serve Spanish-style small plates. Share several to try more.
    • Fish and chips and pub meals are common near the marina and Ocean Village. Good for a relaxed dinner.
    • Bakeries and cafés in the old town sell cheap pastries and sandwiches for lunch on the go.
    • Many shops and cafés take card, but keep some small coins for buses. Prices are in pounds (£), so check menus before you order.
