Landmarks 18

Must-see · 7

  1. 1

    Florence Cathedral

Santa Maria del Fiore is the city's defining landmark, crowned by Brunelleschi's red-tiled dome. Climbing the dome gives close views of the painted interior and the rooftops below. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, and book a dome-climb time slot in advance, since entry is timed and limited.

  2. 2

    Uffizi Gallery

One of the world's great art museums, it holds Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Primavera along with major Renaissance paintings. The collection is large, so plan two to three hours. Book a timed entry ticket online, as same-day queues can be long.

  3. 3

    Galleria dell'Accademia

This is the home of Michelangelo's David, the marble statue that draws most visitors to Florence. Seeing it up close is a highlight of any trip. Reserve a timed-entry ticket ahead, because the museum often sells out.

  4. 4

    Ponte Vecchio

This medieval stone bridge over the Arno River is lined with jewelry shops and is one of the most photographed spots in Italy. It is best seen at sunrise or in the evening, when the crowds thin. It is an easy walk from the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace.

  5. 5

    Piazza della Signoria

This open square is the civic heart of Florence, with sculptures and the grand facade of the town hall around it. It is a good place to start a walking tour of the historic centre. Visit early in the morning for fewer people.

  6. 6

    Palazzo Vecchio

The city's medieval town hall dominates Piazza della Signoria with its tall tower and has served as the seat of Florentine government for centuries. Its interior rooms are rich with Renaissance decoration. Buy a ticket on site or online, and allow about an hour.

  7. 7

    Piazzale Michelangelo

This hilltop square on the south bank of the Arno offers the classic panoramic view over Florence and its cathedral dome. It is especially popular at sunset. You can walk up from the river or take a bus, then descend on foot.
