Landmarks 12

Must-see · 8

  1. 1

    Gangaramaya Temple

Colombo's best-known Buddhist temple, a mix of worship hall, museum and library packed with statues, relics and gifts from around the world. It sits by Beira Lake, so you can combine both in one walk. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and go in the morning to avoid the heat.

  2. 2

    Lotus Tower

A striking lotus-shaped tower and the city's most visible modern landmark, with an observation deck giving wide views over Colombo and the coast. A good first stop to get your bearings. Go near sunset for the best light, and check opening hours before you set out.

  3. 3

    Galle Face Green

The city's seafront promenade, where locals walk, fly kites and eat snacks by the Indian Ocean at dusk. It is free and open to all, and the best time is late afternoon into sunset. It is a short walk from the Fort and the Old Parliament Building.

  4. 4

    Pettah Market

A dense, busy bazaar district that shows Colombo at its most energetic, with spices, textiles and everyday goods spilling into the streets. Come with patience and keep valuables close. Mornings are calmer, and the Red Mosque is nearby.

  5. 5

    Red Mosque

A vividly painted mosque in the Pettah area, famous for its striking red-and-white facade. It is an active place of worship, so dress modestly and check whether visitors are allowed at the time. It pairs naturally with a walk through Pettah Market.

  6. 6

    Independence Memorial Hall

A memorial hall marking Sri Lanka's independence, set in a calm park with a distinctive Kandyan-style roof. It is a quick, worthwhile stop for modern history and photos. Visit in the cooler morning or late afternoon.

  7. 7

    National Museum of Colombo

The country's main museum, holding art, artefacts and royal regalia that give context to Sri Lankan history. Allow an hour or two. It is close to Viharamahadevi Park, so the two make an easy half-day.

  8. 8

    Viharamahadevi Park

Colombo's large central park, with shade, lawns and a relaxed local atmosphere. A good place to rest between sights. It is next to the National Museum and the Town Hall area.

    Getting around

    • No metro or tram; buses are the main public transport.
    • Bus fares start at Rs 30, pay the conductor onboard.
    • Tuk-tuks are everywhere; agree a price or use a meter taxi.
    • PickMe and Uber both work well in Colombo.

    • Eat short eats: fish cutlets, rolls and samosas from bakeries, about Rs 50–150 each.
    • Pettah and Fort have cheap Indian and Sri Lankan eateries; check hygiene and go where locals queue.
    • Seafood is good along the coast; ask the price per kilo before ordering.
    • Tea is everywhere. Order a plain milk tea and expect it very sweet unless you say otherwise.
