Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

The cable car up Table Mountain is Cape Town's defining experience, with rotating cars and sweeping views over the city and both oceans. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds and wind, and check the weather before you buy tickets since the cableway closes in high winds.

  2. 2

    V&A Waterfront

This working harbor is the city's liveliest gathering place, packed with restaurants, shops and views of Table Mountain across the water. It is an easy walk from the city center or a short taxi ride, and evenings are best for dinner with the mountain lit up behind you.

  3. 3

    Robben Island Prison

The ferry to Robben Island and the guided tour of Nelson Mandela's former prison cell is a sobering must-do for understanding South Africa's history. Book tickets well in advance, especially in summer, as ferries sell out and crossings depend on calm seas.

  4. 4

    Boulders Beach

A sheltered cove where you can watch African penguins up close from boardwalks and sometimes share the sand with them. Go early or late to avoid the midday crowds, and bring a windbreaker since the Cape wind can be strong.

  5. 5

    Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

This vast garden at the foot of Table Mountain showcases South Africa's unique flora, with a famous treetop walkway and seasonal blooms. Allow at least half a day, wear comfortable shoes, and consider a picnic on the lawns.

  6. 6

    Bo-Kaap

The brightly painted houses of this historic Cape Malay quarter make it one of the city's most photographed neighborhoods. Walk the steep streets respectfully since people live here, and stop for a koeksister or bobotie at a local cafe.

Highlights

    Day trips from Cape Town

    Hermanus · 1 h 35 by road

★★★★★ · Full day · 118 km from Cape Town

Best way: A direct long-distance coach takes you along a scenic coastal drive to a stop within walking distance of the harbour.

Take a long-distance coach from Cape Town to Hermanus (about 1.5 to 2 hours, with a scenic coastal drive); the town centre and harbour are a short walk or taxi ride from the bus stop.

    • Car1 h 35 · taxi ≈ 1,450 ZAR

    What to see

    • Cliff path along the coast
    • Old Harbour and fish market
    • Whale-watching viewpoints (seasonal, roughly June to November)
    • Stony Point penguin colony

    Good to know

    • Whale-watching season is roughly June to November, the best time for this trip.
    • Check coach timetables in advance, as service frequency may be limited.

Stellenbosch · 44 min by road

★★★★☆ · Full day · 55 km from Cape Town

Best way: The long-distance coach is more dependable than the often-disrupted local rail and drops you near the town centre.

Take a Metrorail train or a long-distance coach from Cape Town to Stellenbosch (about 1 hour), then walk or take a short local taxi into the town centre; check current timetables, as local rail service is often disrupted.

    • Car44 min · taxi ≈ 690 ZAR

    What to see

    • Stellenbosch Village Museum
    • Dorp Street historic buildings
    • Oak-lined town centre and university campus
    • Local wine estates on the Helshoogte and Simonsberg routes

    Good to know

Times and prices are typical one-way estimates (train and bus: Omio / Rome2Rio route data; taxi: local tariff × road distance, tolls extra). Exact prices are on the booking page.

    Swap in instead

    • Swap a city day for the Cape Winelands: a full day of tastings in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek.
    • Take the ferry to Robben Island for the history tour; book ahead and check weather.
    • Drive the Cape Peninsula loop to Cape Point and Boulders Beach penguins in one long day.

    Getting around

    • MetroRail commuter trains link the centre to the Southern Suburbs and Simon's Town; no Sunday service.
    • Trains are safe by day; avoid night travel or ride in a crowded car with a companion.
    • Most ticket offices take cash only; routes show on Google Maps.
    • Uber and Bolt are the easiest way around; airport to centre costs about R150.
    • Ignore unofficial 'airport taxi' touts; they are unmetered and overpriced.
    • Driving is easy on good roads; keep doors locked and avoid unknown areas after dark.

    Where to stay

    • City Bowl · ≈ ZAR 900–2,500 a night
Central base under Table Mountain. Walk to restaurants and museums; short rides to most sights.
    • V&A Waterfront · ≈ ZAR 1,800–5,000 a night
Safe, walkable and full of shops and food. Easy start for Robben Island ferries.
    • Sea Point · ≈ ZAR 1,000–2,800 a night
Promenade walks and ocean views. Good value and quick rides to the centre and beaches.
    • Camps Bay · ≈ ZAR 1,500–4,500 a night
Beach on your doorstep and famous sunsets. Quieter at night; you'll need rides to town.

    Food & drink

    • Try a braai (South African barbecue) and a Cape Malay curry in the Bo-Kaap.
    • Seafood at the V&A Waterfront or Kalk Bay harbour; ask the price before you order.
    • Book a Winelands lunch in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek; many estates need a booking.
    • Cheap eats: biltong, koeksisters and food-market stalls around the City Bowl.
    • Tipping is normal, around 10–15% in restaurants. Check if a service charge is already added.

    Tips

    1. Uber is the safest and most reliable way to get around the city and out to the wine regions
    2. Never hike Table Mountain or Lion's Head alone, and pack for sudden, extreme weather changes
    3. Visit Boulders Beach to see the famous colony of wild African penguins
    4. Be aware of 'load shedding', which are scheduled national power outages
    5. Do not leave valuables visible in your car or unattended on the beach
