Landmarks 10

Must-see · 4

  1. 1

    Bratislava Castle

The city's most famous landmark, a massive white castle on a hill above the Danube with sweeping views over Bratislava and into Austria. It houses the Slovak National Museum and the grounds are free to wander. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and catch the best light; the walk up from the Old Town takes about 15 minutes.

  2. 2

    St. Martin's Cathedral

This Gothic cathedral is where Hungarian kings were crowned for centuries, making it a key piece of Bratislava's history. The interior is serene and the spire dominates the skyline. Dress modestly and check opening hours, as it closes for services; it's a short walk from Michael's Gate.

  3. 3

    Michael's Gate

The only surviving medieval city gate, with a distinctive tower and a weapons museum inside. It marks the entrance to the charming Old Town. Climb the tower for a small fee for a close-up view of the old streets; it's easily reached on foot from anywhere in the center.

  4. 4

    Devín Castle

These dramatic ruins sit on a cliff where the Morava River meets the Danube, offering a powerful sense of history and stunning views. It's a short bus ride from the city center. Bring comfortable shoes for the uneven paths and go on a clear day for the best scenery.
