Landmarks 9

Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Belgrade Fortress

The ancient core of the city, where Roman, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian layers sit above the meeting of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is free to wander and the riverside views at sunset are the highlight. Go in late afternoon and wear comfortable shoes for the uneven cobbles.

  2. 2

    Knez Mihailova Street

Belgrade's main pedestrian spine, lined with 19th-century facades, cafes and shops, connecting the fortress area to Republic Square. It is the natural place to start a walking day and to people-watch in the evening. Visit early morning for quiet photos or after dark when it is liveliest.

  3. 3

    St. Sava Temple

One of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, its huge dome dominates the Vračar skyline and the gold mosaic interior is striking. Entry is free and modest dress is expected. It is a short walk or trolleybus ride from the city center; go on a weekday morning to avoid crowds.

  4. 4

    Skadarlija

A cobbled bohemian quarter of old kafanas and live music, the classic spot for a traditional Serbian evening. It is best experienced at dinner time when the street comes alive. Reserve a table in advance on weekends.

  5. 5

    Nikola Tesla Museum

A small but fascinating museum holding Tesla's personal archive and working demonstrations of his inventions. Guided tours run on a schedule and are the only way to see the exhibits. Check tour times and arrive early, as groups fill up.

  6. 6

    Sava River

The riverfront and its floating splavovi clubs and cafes are central to Belgrade's social life, with good views from the fortress and the bridges. A riverside walk is an easy, free way to see the city from another angle. Evenings are the most atmospheric time.
