    Swap in instead

    • Take a day trip to Cape Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon and a sunset over the sea. Check bus times on the day.
    • Ferries from Piraeus reach the islands; a day trip to Aegina is the easiest. Book ahead in summer.
    • Add a half-day at the National Archaeological Museum, then wander the Exarchia streets nearby.

    Getting around

    • Metro has 3 lines; trains run about 05:30-00:30, later on Friday and Saturday nights.
    • One OASA ticket costs €1.20 and covers metro, tram and bus with transfers for 90 minutes.
    • Airport metro or bus costs about €9 each way; express bus X93/X95 costs €5.50.
    • Taxis are yellow; insist on the meter and expect shared rides at busy times.
    • Ride apps such as Uber and Bolt work in Athens; use them to avoid fare haggling.
    • Driving in the centre is hard: narrow streets, little parking and heavy traffic.
    • Piraeus port is about 10 km from the centre, with ferries to the islands.

    Where to stay

    • Plaka · ≈ EUR 90–220 a night
Old-town lanes right under the Acropolis; walk to the Ancient Agora and most central sights.
    • Syntagma · ≈ EUR 110–280 a night
Central and well connected: metro to the airport and Piraeus, walk to the National Garden and Plaka.
    • Monastiraki · ≈ EUR 80–200 a night
Flea market, street food and the metro hub; lively at night and close to the Ancient Agora.
    • Koukaki · ≈ EUR 70–180 a night
Quiet residential streets near the Acropolis Museum with good local tavernas; often better value.

    Food & drink

    • Try souvlaki and gyros from a grill house: cheap, fast and everywhere. Expect about €3–5 for a wrap.
    • Order meze to share: tzatziki, fava, grilled octopus and small fried fish. Two or three plates per person is plenty.
    • Eat dinner late like locals, roughly 21:00–23:00. Many tavernas are quiet before 20:00.
    • Look for a taverna with a handwritten menu and local diners rather than a photo menu on the street.
    • In summer, eat lunch by the sea on the coast and keep the centre for dinner. Book popular places ahead on weekends.

    Tips

    1. Wear shoes with good grip when visiting the Acropolis, as the ancient marble steps are very slippery
    2. Locals eat dinner very late, often starting around 9 PM or 10 PM
    3. Buy a combined archaeological ticket to access the Acropolis and several other ancient sites at a discount
    4. Avoid the midday heat in summer by visiting ruins early in the morning and taking a long afternoon break
    5. The Plaka neighborhood is picturesque but touristy; head to Psyrri or Exarcheia for a more local, edgy vibe
