Landmarks 6

Must-see · 6

  1. 1

    Sabarmati Ashram

This riverside ashram was Mahatma Gandhi's home and base during India's freedom struggle, making it the city's most meaningful pilgrimage for visitors. Go early morning to avoid heat and crowds; entry is free, and the museum is closed on some public holidays, so check ahead.

  2. 2

    Adalaj Stepwell

A stunning five-storey stepwell carved with intricate Hindu and Islamic motifs, it is one of Gujarat's finest architectural treasures and a photographer's dream. It lies about 18 km north of the city; hire a taxi or auto for the half-day trip, and visit in the cooler morning hours.

  3. 3

    Jama Masjid, Ahmedabad

Built in 1424, this mosque in the old city is famed for its yellow sandstone arches and the shaking minarets nearby, and it anchors the bustling heritage quarter. Dress modestly, remove shoes, and avoid prayer times; it is a short walk from Bhadra Fort.

  4. 4

    Bhadra Fort

The 15th-century fort founded by Ahmed Shah marks the origin of Ahmedabad and now hosts a lively evening market and cultural events. Come after 5 pm when the stalls open and the heat fades; the fort itself is free to enter.

  5. 5

    Sarkhej Roza

A serene complex of tombs and mosques often called the 'Acropolis of Ahmedabad', it blends Islamic and Hindu architectural styles in a peaceful lakeside setting. It is about 8 km southwest of the centre; go at sunset for the best light and fewer crowds.

  6. 6

    Kankaria Lake

A circular 15th-century lake turned family recreation hub, with a zoo, toy train and evening fountain shows, it is the city's favourite outdoor escape. Visit in the late afternoon; the lakefront promenade is free, though individual attractions charge small fees.

    • Satellite · ≈ INR 3,000–9,000 a night
Newer hotels and malls, good for families and longer stays. Further from the Old City, so plan on taxis.

    Food & drink

    • Start with a Gujarati thali: unlimited rotli, dal, shaak, rice and sweets, roughly ₹250–600 a person at mid-range places.
    • Street snacks to try: dhokla, khaman, fafda with jalebi (a Sunday morning favourite) and dabeli.
    • Old City food walks near Manek Chowk are famous; the night market there turns into street food after dark.
    • Ahmedabad is largely vegetarian and many places are dry (no alcohol). Check before you book a dinner.
    • Cheap and filling: a plate of snacks or a simple thali for under ₹150 at local cafeterias. Drink bottled or filtered water.

    Tips

    1. Gujarat is a 'dry state,' meaning alcohol is strictly prohibited for locals, though foreigners can obtain a permit
    2. The street food scene at Manek Chowk (which turns into a night market) is legendary
    3. The city is overwhelmingly vegetarian, offering incredible Gujarati thalis
    4. Visit the Sabarmati Ashram for a deeply moving look into Mahatma Gandhi's life and work
    5. Summers (April-June) are brutally hot, often exceeding 42°C (108°F)
