    Swap in instead

    • Add a day in the Barossa Valley: cellar doors, big red wines and long lunches, about an hour's drive each way.
    • Take the ferry to Kangaroo Island for wildlife and coast, but it needs at least one overnight, not a day trip.
    • Swap a city afternoon for the Adelaide Hills: Hahndorf's German-style main street and lookout stops, about 30–40 minutes by car.

    Getting around

    • Adelaide Metro runs trains, trams and buses with one tap-and-pay system.
    • Trams and some city buses are free within the city centre.
    • Taxis use the meter; airport pickups add a small surcharge.
    • Uber and other ride apps operate across the city.
    • Driving is easy but parking in the CBD costs money.
    • The city is flat and good for walking and cycling.

    Where to stay

    • CBD · ≈ AUD 150–380 a night
Walk to the Central Market, North Terrace museums and the free tram zone. Best base without a car.
    • North Adelaide · ≈ AUD 160–400 a night
Quiet streets, pubs and cafés, a short walk or bus to the city and the Oval.
    • Glenelg · ≈ AUD 170–450 a night
Beachfront stays with the tram running straight into the city.
    • Port Adelaide · ≈ AUD 120–300 a night
Cheaper rooms near the docks, dolphin cruises and the railway museum; a train ride to the CBD.

    Food & drink

    • Start at Adelaide Central Market: graze on cheese, smallgoods, pastries and coffee. Many stalls close early afternoon, so go in the morning.
    • Try a pie floater or a bakery pie, and a Farmers Union iced coffee, a local habit.
    • The Barossa and McLaren Vale wine regions are day trips from the city. Book a tour or a driver if you plan to taste.
    • Laneways off Hindley Street and Peel Street have small bars and cheap eats. Book popular places ahead on weekends.
    • Seafood is best near the coast at Glenelg or Port Adelaide. Check the day's catch and prices on the board.

    Tips

    1. Often called the '20-minute city' because you can reach the beaches, the hills, or the airport in under 20 minutes from the CBD
    2. The Adelaide Central Market is one of the largest undercover fresh produce markets in the Southern Hemisphere
    3. Renting a car is highly recommended to explore the world-class Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wine regions
    4. Take the tram to Glenelg for a beautiful beach sunset and relaxed dining
    5. The sun in summer is dangerously intense; wear a hat and apply high-SPF sunscreen rigorously
