  • Best time: December to FebruaryWarm days near 31°C and the fewest rain days, about 4–8 a month. Ideal for walking and the beaches.
  • Rainy season May to OctoberRain days peak at about 24 in June. Showers are often heavy but short; carry a rain jacket.
  • Hot and humid year-roundLows stay around 23–25°C, so nights are warm. Light, breathable clothes work best.

Landmarks 9

Must-see · 5

  1. 1

    Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

This is the memorial and mausoleum of Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, and the most visited sight in Accra. It combines a museum, gardens and the tomb itself, so it gives a first-time visitor the country's modern history in one stop. Go in the morning to avoid the midday heat, and bring small cash for the modest entry fee.

  2. 2

    Independence Square, Accra

This vast ceremonial square on the coast is where Ghana marks its independence, with the Black Star Gate and memorial arches as its icons. It is free to walk around and best visited early morning or late afternoon for cooler air and better light. It sits close to Osu, so you can combine it with a walk through that district.

  3. 3

    Osu Castle

A centuries-old coastal fort that served as seat of government for much of Ghana's history, it is a key stop for understanding the city's colonial and post-independence past. Access is often restricted because it remains a state building, so check opening arrangements before you go rather than assuming you can walk in. It is a short drive from Independence Square.

  4. 4

    Makola Market

Accra's biggest and busiest market is a full sensory experience of food, fabric and everyday commerce, and it is a must for seeing the city at work. Go early in the morning when it is cooler and less crowded, and keep valuables close in the narrow lanes. It is central and easy to reach by taxi or trotro.

  5. 5

    Jamestown Lighthouse

The lighthouse stands over the old Jamestown harbour, one of the city's oldest quarters, with good views over the fishing community and coastline. Come in the late afternoon for softer light and a walk around the nearby streets. It is west of the centre and best reached by taxi.

Highlights

    Day trips from Accra

    Cape Coast · 2 h 50 by road

    ★★★★★ · Full day · 168 km from Accra

Best way: At 170 minutes each way by car, the trip exceeds 2h30 and public transport is slow, with the bus taking 6h 43m via Tema, so a tour avoids the long travel and last-mile problem.

Take a direct bus or intercity coach from Accra's Kaneshie or Circle terminals to Cape Coast (about 2.5 to 3 hours), then a taxi to the castle and Kakum; plan an early start for the return.

    • Plan an early start for the return journey.

Aburi · 34 min by road

    ★★★☆☆ · Half day · 31 km from Accra

Best way: The 34-minute drive beats the 2h 50m bus, which involves a change at Adenta Barrier, so a taxi is clearly the faster option for this short trip.

Take a tro-tro or taxi from Accra's Circle or Kaneshie area toward Aburi (about 1 hour); the botanical gardens are a short local taxi ride from the town centre, and you can return the same way.

    Swap in instead

    • Add a day for Cape Coast and Elmina castles, about 2–3 hours west by road. Go early and hire a driver.
    • Swap one city day for Aburi Botanical Gardens and the hills, roughly an hour north of Accra.
    • Beach lovers can trade a city afternoon for Bojo Beach or a boat trip on the Volta near Ada.

    Getting around

    • No metro or tram; TroTros (minibuses) are the main public transport.
    • TroTros run fixed routes; a 'mate' calls out destinations.
    • Taxis rarely use meters; agree the fare before you ride.
    • Ride apps that work: Uber, Bolt, Yango, InDrive.
    • Hiring a car with driver is common for sightseeing.
    • Walking is fine by day; watch for open drains and traffic.

    Where to stay

    • Osu · ≈ GHS 350–900 a night
Walk to restaurants, bars and Oxford Street shops. Central for nightlife and easy taxi rides to the old town.
    • Airport Residential · ≈ GHS 600–1,400 a night
Closest to the airport and big hotels. Quiet streets, good for early flights and business trips.
    • Labone · ≈ GHS 450–1,100 a night
Leafy and calm, with cafés and embassies nearby. A short ride from Osu and the beaches.
    • Cantonments · ≈ GHS 700–1,600 a night
Quiet, upscale and central. Good for longer stays and travellers who want space and security.

    Food & drink

    • Try Ghanaian staples: jollof rice, waakye (rice and beans), banku with tilapia, and fufu with light soup.
    • Chop bars are cheap local canteens. Expect a filling plate for roughly GHS 30–60; check the price first.
    • For red-red (beans, plantain and palm oil) and grilled tilapia, look around Osu and Labadi.
    • Street snacks: kelewele (spiced fried plantain), kebab skewers and roasted corn. Eat where it is busy and freshly cooked.
    • Book ahead for popular weekend spots. Many kitchens close early on Sundays; check on the day.

    Tips

    1. Use Uber or Bolt for reliable, safe transport instead of navigating tro-tros
    2. Visit the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
    3. The local music and nightlife scene is incredibly dynamic and famous across West Africa
    4. Wear light, breathable clothing due to the intense humidity
    5. Respect local customs when visiting, particularly in the older Ga neighborhoods
